Discover Lutowiska from two perspectives: its historic cultural sites and a viewpoint overlooking the High Bieszczady Mountains. Nearby, a 13-kilometre historical and natural history trail adds to this selection of attractions. These offer specific starting points for exploring both cultural history and the landscape. When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between the different types of destinations: cemeteries, a religious building, a themed trail and the viewpoint each offer a different perspective on the destination.

Travel information

The Information and Tourism Education Centre of Bieszczady National Park in Lutowiska is the main organiser and source of information for individual visitors and tour groups travelling to the High Bieszczady Mountains. The centre is open year-round; check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.

Cultural history and historic sites

Lutowiska’s history dates back to 1580. A later historical reference can be found at the Greek Catholic cemetery: it was established around the turn of the 19th century and is located next to the site of a former Orthodox church. The historical perspective therefore encompasses both an early reference point and a later cemetery, whose location also points to a former church site.

The Jewish cemetery adds a regional comparison to the picture of the cultural heritage: after the cemetery in Lesko, it is the second-largest Jewish cemetery in the Bieszczady Mountains. Its distinction is its place within the region; by contrast, the Greek Catholic cemetery is notable for its date of establishment and its location beside the site of the former Orthodox church. Considering the two sites together helps you distinguish between Lutowiska’s different historical features.

The parish church is notable for its architecture. It is listed in the register of historic monuments and is considered the only example of Neo-Gothic religious architecture in the Polish Bieszczady Mountains. This gives it a different cultural and historical context from the cemeteries: its listing as a historic monument and its distinctive architectural status are what stand out. If you are interested in religious buildings, this regional distinction offers another perspective on the town’s history.

A themed trail nearby

The Ekomuzeum “Trzy Kultury” (Three Cultures) historical and natural history trail runs nearby. It is 13 kilometres long and leads through the Lutowiska area to, among other places, synagogue ruins, an old Jewish school, the site of a former Orthodox church, a Greek Catholic cemetery and old Bojko houses known as chyże. The sites mentioned range from architectural remains and religious landmarks to traditional houses. Unlike a single building or cemetery, the trail brings together several themes. Its 13-kilometre length is a practical consideration when comparing it with individual cultural sites.

Views of the High Bieszczady Mountains

The viewpoint in Lutowiska offers views of the High Bieszczady Mountains. It differs thematically from the cemeteries, the parish church and the historical trail: here, the landscape is the main attraction. If you would rather base your travel decision on the landscape than on cultural history and architecture, this viewpoint is another factor to consider when choosing a destination.
