In Katowice, different chapters of the city’s history meet leisure opportunities by the water and nature reserves. You can therefore focus your trip planning on a range of themes: historic settlements, industrial heritage, museums or outdoor activities. The places below show how varied these themes are throughout the city.

Water and Activities in the Dolina Trzech StawĂłw

Dolina Trzech StawĂłw offers several ways to spend an active few hours. A route almost four kilometres long is designated for roller skating; there are also cycling and running routes. The waterside area includes a kayak rental and a landscaped beach with a bathing area. Boats, kayaks, pedal boats and surfboards are also available at the watersports landing stage near Camping MOSiR. This brings together different ways to be active, both on land and on the water. Seasonal services may vary in their operating hours and availability, so check in advance what is offered during your travel dates.

City History in the Park and Museum

Kościuszko Park is the oldest city park in Katowice. It is home to the wooden Church of St Michael the Archangel, dating from 1510. The park and church offer different historical points of interest: one is known as the city’s oldest green space, while the other is a building with a clearly stated date of origin. For a longer historical perspective, visit the permanent exhibition “Światło historii. Górny Śląsk na przestrzeni dziejów” at the Silesian Museum. It tells the story of Upper Silesia from the earliest times to the political changes of 1989 and is located at the former mine site in Katowice.

Music festivals are also part of the city’s annual cultural life: OFF, Tauron and Rawa. Dates and details may vary. If you would like to combine your trip with a festival, check the dates for your chosen travel period.

Two Settlements, Two Urban Planning Ideas

Nikiszowiec and Giszowiec offer insights into different approaches to housing for mining workers. Nikiszowiec was built between 1908 and 1927 to designs by Emil and Georg Zillmann as a historic miners’ settlement. Since 2011, it has been on Poland’s list of historic monuments. An audio guide is available to download; if you wish to borrow one from a branch of the Katowice History Museum, check the current options in advance.

Giszowiec was built between 1907 and 1910 for employees of the “Giesche” mine. As a garden-city settlement, its guiding vision differs from that of Nikiszowiec: the workers’ houses were modelled on old Upper Silesian country homes. In Giszowiec, Izba Śląska Gawlikówka displays paintings by Edward Gawlik. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

Industrial History and Contemporary Art

Other attractions offer their own perspectives on industrial history. Fabryka Porcelany is part of the Route of Industrial Monuments. Walcownia – Muzeum Hutnictwa Cynku is a historic post-industrial building with a rolling mill and steam engines dating from 1903. Galeria Szyb Wilson focuses on contemporary art and is housed in a revitalised building that once served as the changing house and bathhouse of the Wilson shaft at the “Wieczorek” mine. Its current exhibition programme may change. Together, these places highlight different aspects of industrial heritage: a route, historic machinery and a building now used as a gallery.

Nature Reserves in Katowice

The Las Murckowski and Ochojec nature reserves are located in Katowice. Las Murckowski was established in 1953 and later expanded. Today, it covers more than 100 hectares, including the slopes of WzgĂłrze Wandy, the highest point in Katowice.
