Osiek lies on the shore of Lake Kałębie. The town combines a vast waterscape with cycling and walking trails, as well as its own architectural and church history. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore worth considering the purpose of your trip: will Osiek mainly be the starting point or destination of a cycling route, is a loop around the lake the main attraction, or are you interested in the town’s history? The local sights offer distinct, specific points of interest for each.

At Lake Kałębie and on the trails

Lake Kałębie covers 466 hectares and is the largest lake in Kociewie. Osiek lies on its shore, making the expanse of water a defining geographical feature of the town. A blue hiking trail runs around the lake. If you choose a hike based on its route, you can take a trail here whose course is shaped by the lake itself. Check the latest route details locally.

For cycling plans, two routes can be compared by length and endpoints. The green Szlak Jeziorny runs for 64.68 kilometres from Skarszewy to Osiek; the yellow Szlak Świętego Rocha runs for 34.68 kilometres from Osiek to Starogard Gdański. The routes differ by exactly 30 kilometres. The green trail ends in Osiek, while the yellow one starts there. If Osiek is your overnight base, this difference shows whether a route leads into the town or starts from it. Route markers and surfaces may change along the cycling routes; check both before setting out. The red Osiecki hiking trail is a section of the Jeziora Kociewskie trail. The blue trail, by contrast, goes around Lake Kałębie: the two hiking routes therefore differ, one being a loop around the lake and the other a section of a named route. Check local route details for the hiking trails as well.

Church, castle, and wooden houses

Several historical periods stand side by side in the town. St. Roch’s Church in Osiek was built from 1860 to 1866. The parish church houses relics of St. Roch, including a bone and the cloth in which his body was wrapped after his death. A small Teutonic Order castle was built above Lake Kałębie around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. Kociewie wooden houses with characteristic arcades date from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The town’s history therefore spans the 14th and 15th centuries through the 19th and into the early 20th century; the three features represent the history of the Teutonic Order, religious devotion, and regional architecture.

Events in Osiek

The Gospel Music Festival is held in Osiek every year. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the latest dates in advance. The tradition of the “Letnie Jarmarki” dates back to 1767; traditionally, the event took place on the first Sunday after St. Roch’s Day. Check the current events calendar for your specific travel dates.
