A neo-Gothic church dating from 1894 and a protected historic village layout define Huta Kalna’s cultural and historical character. The lake Szarmachy in the Sołectwo Huta Kalna and the Szlak Arboretum offer two other points of interest: swimming and a cycling and hiking route. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Huta Kalna, you can base your choice of location on whether the village’s history or outdoor activities are the deciding factor.
Church and historic sites
St Joseph’s Church in Huta Kalna was built in 1894 by members of the Evangelical Church of the Old Prussian Union and is neo-Gothic in style. Its historic movable furnishings include a wooden choir gallery from the 1940s, a baptismal font from the late 19th century and a wooden Christ on the cross, possibly dating from the 18th century. The construction date and movable furnishings thus offer two different historical perspectives on the same church.
The present-day rectory of St Joseph’s Parish, formerly the pastor’s house, was built in 1907. The cemetery in Huta Kalna is a former Protestant cemetery dating from 1894. It lies east of the village centre on a gentle natural slope; a path running north to south leads through its centre to the chapel. The dates have different roles: 1894 is the year the church was built and the date associated with the former cemetery; 1907 is the year the former pastor’s house was built.
A protected village layout
The entire village of Huta Kalna is protected as a historic rural settlement layout. This includes the historic spatial structure, historic plot divisions, the historic network of paths, the arrangement of farmsteads, small historic monuments and the historic greenery associated with the buildings and network of paths. The protection therefore extends beyond individual buildings: it applies to the village as a settlement layout. In this way, the cultural and historical context encompasses dated sites such as the church, cemetery and rectory, as well as the broader history of the village structure.
Bathing area and Szlak Arboretum
Lake Szarmachy in the Sołectwo Huta Kalna serves as a bathing area. Swimming is subject to seasonal conditions; check locally before your trip. The 26 km-long Szlak Arboretum runs from Huta Kalna via Mały Bukowiec and Twardy Dół to the arboretum and dendrological garden in Wirty. The route is unmarked and designated for cycling and hiking. Its course therefore identifies both the places along the way and a specific destination.
When choosing between the lake and the route, the practical considerations differ: for swimming, it is important to check the seasonal conditions; for the route, its length, course and lack of markings matter. You can therefore plan your stay around either the bathing option or the route, without treating these different activities as one fixed combined programme.
