For a stay in Żarnowska, several nature themes can be distinguished: the “Wielkie Bagno” peat bog, woodland by Lake Łebsko, and destinations along the lakeshore and towards Łeba. The boardwalk to the bog ends at a platform; the yellow-marked southern path runs along the south side of the lake. A nature trail and a cycle route offer further points of reference. When planning your outings, you can consider whether peatland vegetation, woodland, access to the lake or a cycling route should be the focus. The different destinations help you keep these priorities for your stay distinct.
Bog and information board
The boardwalk in the Żarnowska protected area is about 131 m long and ends at a platform above the regenerating “Wielkie Bagno” peat bog. The peat bog and platform form the boardwalk’s destination. There is also an information board on the boardwalk to Wielkie Bagno, with explanations of typical bog species. These include, among others, cranberry, peat mosses, marsh rosemary, cross-leaved heath, hare’s-tail cottongrass and sundew. If you are particularly interested in bog plants, you will find both a specific destination and information about individual species here.
Woodland and access to the lake
The yellow-marked southern path runs along the south side of Lake Łebsko. Along the route are stands of pine, alder and birch, as well as artificially planted spruce stands on peat soil. The path therefore takes in several types of woodland and a specifically named type of ground. This makes it a different outing option from the bog boardwalk: while the boardwalk leads to a particular bog destination, the yellow path follows the south side of the lake and passes through various woodland areas. If you like comparing landscapes by their vegetation, the tree species and peat soil mentioned here give you specific points of reference.
In the vicinity of Żarnowska, access to Lake Łebsko is only possible along a designated path, due to waterbird nesting sites. This route is therefore part of planning an outing to the lake; it helps protect the nesting sites. Local access rules may change, so check the notices before your visit.
Other paths and points of reference
The “Żarnowska” nature trail begins near the bridge over the Łeba River, by the Kashubian settlement of Żarnowska. This is a distinct point of reference, separate from the boardwalk over Wielkie Bagno and the lakeshore. A path leads from Żarnowska to a small boardwalk on Lake Łebsko. Here, the lake is the destination, not the peat bog. When planning, you can treat the start of the nature trail, the bog platform and the small boardwalk by the lake as different starting points.
A field path runs alongside Lake Łebsko all the way to Łeba. Cycle Route No. 3 reaches Żarnowska after three kilometres. When finding your way, it is worth distinguishing between destinations and types of route: the field path leads to Łeba, while the cycle route is designated for bicycles and reaches Żarnowska. These details give you different points of reference when comparing outings by the lake with a cycling route. Surface conditions on the cycle route and the paths to the lake may change; check them before setting out.
