There are several distinct themes to choose from for a stay in Gdynia: modernist architecture, maritime history and routes with specified distances. First consider what you want your days to revolve around: Would you like to explore historic architecture on foot, discover the interiors of Dar Pomorza or plan a specific route? The destinations below offer different perspectives on Gdynia. If you are planning several days, you can spread the themes across them; if time is limited, a main interest can help narrow down the options.

Modernist architecture

Gdynia’s Modernist Centre dates back to the 1930s and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its origins provide a clear historical reference, while the inscription places the centre in an international World Heritage context. The Gdyński Szlak Modernizmu passes between historic buildings; walking the route lets you explore the city’s modernist architecture. This gives you two distinct ways to approach it: considering the centre’s historical period and World Heritage context, or following a walking route focused on modernist architecture. If the city’s built history is of particular interest to you, consider whether you would rather focus on the period and World Heritage context or on the architecture along the route.

Maritime history

Dar Pomorza is located on Nabrzeże Pomorskie in Gdynia and is a museum ship. The more than one-hundred-year-old, three-masted frigate is one of the most significant monuments of Poland’s 20th-century maritime heritage. Visitors can go onto the main deck and enter the interior spaces, gaining a direct impression of the living and working conditions of Polish sailors and officers.

ORP Błyskawica offers a different historical focus. It is the oldest surviving destroyer and a veteran of the Second World War. Since 1976, it has been a museum ship and part of the Naval Museum. Whereas Dar Pomorza’s main deck and interiors convey the living and working conditions aboard, Błyskawica focuses on the destroyer’s wartime history and its place in the Naval Museum. The two maritime themes therefore differ both in ship type and in historical perspective.

Routes and other interests

The yellow Szlak Kępy Redłowskiej offers another way to incorporate Gdynia into your day’s plans. The route is 12.6 kilometres long and runs entirely within the city limits of Gdynia. Bear this distance in mind as its own walking focus when planning other activities. You can then decide whether to add, for example, the architecture route or Dar Pomorza on the same day, or save them for another day. This gives the route its own place in your itinerary, rather than treating it merely as a brief stop along the way.

If zoological attractions are more important to you than architecture or maritime history, Akwarium Gdyńskie offers a clearly different focus. It is a zoological garden at the end of the South Pier, which extends Kościuszko Square.
