Sitno brings together the history of a settlement and Lake Sitno, with other water sports and outdoor activities available nearby. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish between them: swimming is possible at the lake, while the water sports centre, riding lessons and kayaking are available at other specified locations. This makes it easy to choose according to your preferred focus: the lakeshore, water sports or an activity in the surrounding area.
Lake Sitno and swimming access
Lake Sitno has an area of 0.65 km². Swimming is possible in the lake; the access points are shallow and grassy or sandy and grassy. The lake is considered relatively shallow, and its water is described as clean; its water quality is classified as Class II. Since water conditions can change seasonally, check the current situation and access conditions before swimming. The information about the shore and water offers different points of reference to help you decide whether a visit to the lake suits your plans.
Settlement history and name
The place name Sitno derives from nearby Lake Sitno. According to tradition, Sitno was founded as a settlement in 1558; eventually, the place came into the possession of the Carthusians. In Kashubian, the place name is Šëtno. A municipal description from 2011 classified Sitno as a place with an agricultural and tourism function. The lake is thus also part of the story behind the name; the settlement’s origins and its association with the Carthusians offer another, historical perspective on the place.

Culture in the wider destination of Karthaus
In the wider destination of Karthaus, the 14th-century Gothic collegiate church is located in Kartuzy. It is among the most valuable architectural monuments in Pomerania, unique on a national scale, and bears witness to the work of the Carthusian Order. Its Baroque roof, shaped like a coffin lid, is a distinctive feature. It symbolises the monastic ideal of the order, expressed in the motto “memento mori”.
Also in Kartuzy, the Franciszek Treder Kashubian Museum presents Kashubian cultural heritage: literature, material culture, language, and regional history and traditions. Its exhibits are displayed in eight exhibition rooms in the main building. They include Bazyli’s forge, the “Kaszubska współczesność z korzeni wyrasta” exhibition and temporary exhibitions. The church and museum thus offer a distinct cultural context in Karthaus, alongside the Sitno-specific themes of the lake and settlement history.
