The history of the linen industry is a distinctive way to explore Żyrardów. Historical displays, the Resursa, the park and the bathing area complement this theme with separate points of interest for planning your trip.

Linen industry and factory settlement

The Filip de Girard Linen Museum presents Żyrardów’s linen traditions, which date back to 1829. Its exhibitions place these traditions in the context of the development of the linen industry and the Linen Products Factory, described as Europe’s most productive centre of the linen industry. The museum’s old looms were restored to working order after the decline of the Linen Works and are now operated for demonstrations during the summer season.

A walk along the “Industrial Żyrardów” Industrial Architecture Trail takes about two hours, excluding any additional visits inside buildings. It conveys the significance of the Żyrardów factory and the working and living conditions of the local community during the city’s rapid industrial development. The route thus complements the machine demonstrations with the social perspective of industrial history.

Historical views and interiors

The Museum of Western Mazovia has a watercolour panorama of Żyrardów’s factory settlement in its collection. Created in 1899, the work measures 140 × 367 cm, depicts the settlement from above and was commissioned by the owners of the Żyrardów Works for the World’s Fair in Paris. It offers an overview of the factory settlement, while the walk focuses on the factory’s significance and working and living conditions.

The Resursa showcases historic interior design: its ballroom features rich gilding and colourful murals and is designed in the Renaissance style with Neoclassical elements. Żyrardów’s Tourist and Cultural Information Centre is also based in the Resursa. The Resursa thus combines a richly decorated ballroom with the home of the information centre.

Park and bathing area

Karol August Dittrich Municipal Park is a nearly 6-hectare green space in the centre of Żyrardów, in the residential district of the factory settlement. Its grounds are gently contoured, and its water features are designed to look natural and include numerous bridges. Its location in the residential district of the factory settlement places the park within the city’s historical context.

The bathing area at Żyrardów Reservoir includes a 750 m² sandy beach and supervised swimming areas. Swimming facilities may vary by season. If swimming is important to your trip, check the conditions for your visit dates in advance.
