Local History and Remembrance

During the Battle of Radzymin, from August 13 to 16, 1920, the wayside cross in Cegielnia served as a landmark for soldiers, medics, and support services. The precise dates place this role within a clearly defined historical episode. Mentioning medics and support services extends the account beyond the soldiers to include other groups for whom the cross served as a landmark.

In 1990, Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Radzymina restored the Żołnierski Cross. Residents of Cegielnia look after it. In 2020, on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw, the village community thoroughly renovated the cross. The years 1990 and 2020 mark different stages of work on the Żołnierski Cross.

According to local tradition, a resident of Cegielnia named Wiktor erected the first cross at the spot where he buried the body of an insurgent. The insurgent had been thrown from a kibitka while being transported into exile. The story links Wiktor’s actions to the burial and explains why a cross is said to have been erected there. It focuses on an individual’s fate and is explicitly presented as local tradition.

In the historical account, different perspectives sit side by side: a precisely dated event in which a wayside cross had a practical function, and a personal local story about Wiktor. This means local history is not limited to a single form of remembrance.
