Sochaczew Castle combines a prominent location on the right bank of the Bzura with an event in the history of Masovian law: the Masovian Statutes were adopted here in 1377. A 17-kilometre trail following the fortifications of the Second World War also offers a practical starting point for planning. There are also museums, a short cycling route and an opportunity to go kayaking nearby. You can tailor your visit to your own interests, balancing culture with different types of activity.

Castle and history

Sochaczew Castle stands on a hill on the right bank of the Bzura. Around the middle of the 14th century, Prince Siemowit III had a stone castle built there in the Gothic style. The Masovian Statutes were adopted at a meeting of princes in the castle in 1377; they are considered the oldest written collection of Masovian law. The castle ruins are considered Sochaczew’s oldest monument. The castle therefore offers a way to distinguish between architectural history and regional legal history: its construction is dated approximately to the middle of the 14th century, while the statutes are associated with the year 1377. Anyone interested in the history of Masovia will find both a description of a medieval castle and a link to a specific historical event here.

Museums and different themes

The Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum in Sochaczew was officially opened on 6 September 1986. It is open to visitors; check the latest visitor information before your visit. The precise opening date provides a different historical reference point from the medieval castle. The Museum of the Sochaczew Region and the Bzura Battlefield is also in the town. If you plan to visit this museum, check the current opening hours in advance. The two museums focus on different topics: narrow-gauge railways at one, and the Sochaczew region and the Bzura Battlefield at the other.

Routes and activity options

The marked trail following the fortifications of the Second World War is 17 kilometres long, passes through both sides of the town and can be explored in full or in shorter sections. It was created in 2024. If you plan to rely on the trail markings for navigation, check the current route before setting out. The option of walking individual sections is an alternative to completing the entire route, while the total distance provides a clear measure of the full trail. A short cycling route starts at Plac Kościuszki. This gives you a choice between a marked trail with a specified total distance and the option of shorter sections, and a short cycling route with a known starting point.

A new display with cases was created in Schron Regelbau 701 on ul. KÄ…towa in 2024.

Kayaking nearby

At Moto Przystań in Plecewice, you can use kayaks to continue along the Szlak Jagiełły by water. Plecewice is near Sochaczew. Check in advance whether this option is available on your dates. This lets you include a water-based activity nearby in your plans, alongside the town’s history and walking routes.

When choosing accommodation in Sochaczew, you can start with your main interest: would you like your stay to focus primarily on the town’s history, include a longer route with the option of walking it in sections, or also feature an activity nearby? For your plans, check the museums’ latest visitor information and kayak availability before finalising your itinerary.
