The sacred history of Łęka brings together architectural forms, precise dates and smaller memorials in Pustelnik. These include a former wooden church, the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria, bells, religious artworks and historic sites. Each date relates to a specific building or object; together, they provide an overview stretching from the founding of the parish to sacred objects from the 20th century. For travellers interested in culture, this makes not only the architecture but also the chronology of individual details a meaningful focus.

The former wooden church

The Church of St. Stanislaus and St. Catherine was built in 1843 and demolished in 1983 because of its poor technical condition. It was considered a valuable example of the wooden sacred architecture characteristic of the region. The building was constructed using log construction, with a boarded façade. Its floor plan was rectangular, with a flat-ended chancel; a roof turret stood on the gable roof above the transept.

The architectural terms describe different aspects of the building: log construction refers to the structure, while the boarded façade describes its exterior design. The floor plan and the form of the chancel indicate the shape of the church interior; the gable roof and roof turret describe the roof structure. Together, these details give a specific picture of the former wooden church, rather than reducing it to the general characteristic of being a “wooden building.”

Church, bells and religious artwork

The Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria in Pustelnik was built from 1983 to 2003 to a design by Wiesława Pląska in a contemporary style. Its high altar contains an image of the Virgin Mary and Child of the Hodegetria type. The image was probably created in the 15th or 16th century in a workshop in Lesser Poland. This allows the history of the church’s construction and the presumed date of the altarpiece to be considered as distinct periods.

The parish in Pustelnik was founded in 1540. Two bells from the former wooden church are still in use in the parish: “Stanisław,” dating from 1920, and “Józef,” dating from 1928. The bells add their own names and dates to the local church history. They are another facet alongside the construction dates of the churches and the founding of the parish.

Rectory, cemetery and memorials

The rectory in Pustelnik was also built in 1843. It is surrounded by monumental oaks said to be 300 years old. The construction date and the age given for the trees refer to two different measures of time: a year for the building and an age description for the oaks.

The parish cemetery dates from the first half of the 19th century. The churchyard contains the grave of the Arkuszewski family. The former school building in Pustelnik is a wooden structure dating from the 1930s. There is also a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1919 and a statue of the Virgin Mary and Child. The cemetery, grave, school building and statues extend the view beyond church architecture to include other historic and religious memorials.
