Niemojewice combines a specific riverside location with a long history: it lies on the left bank of the Pilica, was once a village and is now one of Warka’s districts. Two different perspectives shape the way the place is seen: archaeological evidence from the early Roman Empire and kayaking routes that place Niemojewice on the river. When planning a trip, it is worth distinguishing a short local stretch from the proposed multi-day water route.

Archaeology and Written History

The settlement of Niemojewice is dated to the period from 0 to 200 AD. During archaeological work, a post-built dwelling was discovered in an orchard. The term refers to a building method in which posts serve as load-bearing elements, giving the find a tangible architectural dimension. Excavations also uncovered pieces of slag, pottery shards, a spindle whorl and other valuable objects. The slag may indicate the processing of bog iron ore; this remains a possible interpretation. The finds add to the evidence provided by the house, but they cannot all be classified with the same degree of certainty.

One of the earliest written mentions of Niemojewice dates to the early 15th century. In a 1406 document, Bishop of Poznań Wojciech Jastrzębiec transferred the tithe from the ducal village of Niemojewice to St John’s Cathedral in Warsaw. The document thus records a specific levy and an institutional connection. It belongs to a different period from the archaeological dating: many centuries separate the period assigned to the settlement, from 0 to 200 AD, and the document.

An Inn on the Old Trade Route

The town’s history in the 16th century also points to movement through the region. At that time, Niemojewice had an inn known throughout Masovia, on a busy old trade route from Warka via Przybyszew to Nowe Miasto. This connects the place with a historic transport route and a well-known stopping place of the time. The inn is part of the area’s history, not an indication of a current offering. Together with the 1406 document, it shows that the recorded local connections differ: one was a levy documented in writing, the other an inn on a trade route.

Kayaking: a Short Stretch or a Multi-day Proposal

For a manageable kayaking trip, the Niemojewice–Warka stretch is a specific point of reference: it is four kilometres long, takes about an hour and is considered very short. The actual duration may vary depending on water conditions. This stretch is therefore on a different scale from a multi-day tour.

The proposed Pilica kayaking route runs from Nowe Miasto nad Pilicą via Niemojewice to Mniszew on the Vistula. A route description published on 26 February 2025 gives the route’s length as 79 kilometres and its duration as three days. These figures refer to the proposed route as a whole, not to the four-kilometre stretch to Warka. The comparison makes the difference in planning scope clear: a short stretch of about an hour versus a multi-day water route. If you are considering the longer proposal, check the latest route description and water conditions before planning.

The River Surroundings on Foot

Nearby, between Bielany and Niemojewice, there is an area between the Pilica and the escarpment that is currently overgrown with shrubs. Residents of Warka use it for outings and walks. This offers a different perspective on the river surroundings from the kayaking routes: here, the focus is on an area used for walks and outings; there, on specific water routes of different durations. This makes it possible to distinguish the town’s history, its riverside location and the travel options on offer, without treating a short stretch and a multi-day route as the same undertaking.
