Gostynin offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: buildings tell the story of the city, a multicultural themed trail adds a distinctive touch, and lakes and hiking trails round out the cityscape. The three nature reserves of Ostetnica, Dybanka, and Drzewce are located within the territory of Gostynin. The lakes of Gostynin are considered an attractive feature of the city landscape. When planning your time here, you can choose between historic sights, a themed exploration, and longer routes.

Architectural history across different eras

Prince Siemowit IV built the stone Gostynin Castle around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, replacing the earlier wooden defensive tower built by Siemowit III. A later, turbulent episode is also part of the castle’s history: Tsar Vasili IV Shuisky and his family were held captive there in 1611 and died at the castle the following year.

The Neoclassical town hall was built from 1821 to 1824 to a design by architect Hilary Szpilowski. It replaced a wooden town hall that burned down in 1809. Its features include arcaded niches on the ground floor and a four-sided clock tower with an openwork roof lantern. The former inn at Rynek 16 reveals a different architectural history: it was built in the 1820s as the city’s second brick building. The Neoclassical building stands on Baroque foundations and above cellars dating from the 18th century.

The brick house at 14 Floriańska Street dates from 1828 and originally belonged to the Kmit couple. Two Tuscan columns and small gables above the windows define its façade. A later era is represented by today’s St. James’s Chapel: the Neo-Gothic church was built between 1883 and 1886. The different construction dates and styles offer a clear comparison, from the medieval history of the castle to 19th-century Neo-Gothic architecture.

Themed trail and festival on the last Sunday in July

The multicultural themed trail consists of eleven information boards at different locations around the city. It adds a thematic perspective across several stops to the sights offered by individual buildings. Every year on the last Sunday in July, a traditional festive indulgence in honor of the Apostle James is celebrated at St. James’s Chapel. If you are planning a stay during this period, you can take this recurring festival into account when choosing your dates.

Lakes, nature reserves, and trails

The three nature reserves of Ostetnica, Dybanka, and Drzewce are located within the territory of Gostynin; the lakes also shape the city landscape. There are several hiking routes to choose from. The green-marked “Leśna pętla” trail is 15.5 kilometers long and starts at the Rynek in Gostynin. The yellow-marked “Szlak rynnowych jezior polodowcowych” trail passes Gostynin railway station on the way to Lake Kocioł, one kilometer away. The descriptions therefore provide different kinds of guidance: the total length is given for “Leśna pętla,” while the station and lake are highlighted as waypoints for the yellow trail. Check local conditions before setting out.

The tourist cycling route network can also be factored into your plans: Gostynin is its central starting and ending point, and the routes explore the area around the city. However, they are not marked on site. Bear this in mind when navigating if you are planning a bike ride. This allows you to choose different focuses for your stay without having to combine the historic sights, themed trail, and routes around the city into a single itinerary.
