Garwolin offers two distinct focuses for a stay in Garwoliński: architectural and urban history on the one hand, and activity on the 17-kilometre hiking and cycling trail to Wilga on the other. In the city, historical plaques, churches and memorial sites trace different eras. If you prefer the outdoors, there is a route from Garwolin through forests along the banks of the Wilga River to Wilga. When planning your trip, consider whether the city’s history or the trail should be the main focus of your stay.

City history through buildings and memorial sites

Garwolin’s urban layout, dating from the 15th to the 20th century, is recorded in the municipal register of historic monuments. The Historical Trail is marked at 31 locations around the city. The Janusz Monument also tells part of the city’s story: it commemorates the granting of town rights on 20 July 1423 and stands beside a chronicle of the city. Together, these places offer different ways to explore the past—from the development of the urban fabric to a specific date.

The Church of the Transfiguration combines architectural history and art. The parish Church of the Transfiguration was built between 1890 and 1909 as a Neo-Baroque brick building, replacing earlier wooden churches. The collegiate Church of the Transfiguration has three naves and a cruciform plan; it is also Neo-Baroque and was consecrated on 5 July 1900. The main altar houses a painting of the Transfiguration by Wincenty Łukasiewicz, dating from 1894. The side altars contain paintings of Saint Stanislaus Kostka, from 1897, and Saint Joseph, from the late 19th century.

Another point of interest is the parish cemetery, established in the first half of the 19th century. At the centre of its oldest section stands the Neoclassical Chapel of Saint Anthony, built in 1839 and one of the city’s oldest masonry buildings. There are also two educational trails running past the graves of people honoured for their service to their homeland. The Garwolin military cemetery was established between 1949 and 1952 and comprises 137 mass graves. It is listed in the register of historic monuments for its preserved artistic and historical value.

The former Koszary barracks complex also reflects the city’s military history. It was built for the Russian 13th Count Münnich Dragoon Regiment and comprised about 20 buildings, including stables, workshops, storehouses, a riding arena, an Orthodox church and a casino. During the interwar period, the 1st Mounted Rifles Regiment was stationed there. Garwolin also has a former cavalry barracks complex dating from around the turn of the 20th century, with stables, barracks buildings and a former garrison church.

The city’s history also includes places and crafts beyond these building complexes. The former Austeria is probably one of Garwolin’s oldest masonry buildings. On 25 January 1863, a rebel detachment of riflemen and scythe-bearers led by Gustaw Zakrzewski won a battle against Tsarist troops near the building. Garwolin was also historically known for sheepskin coats and fine horse harnesses.

Routes, leisure and event days

The 17-kilometre hiking and cycling trail runs from Garwolin through forests along the banks of the Wilga River to Wilga. Its defined length and clear direction make it a distinct focus alongside the city’s history. Check local trail conditions before setting out. Garwolin’s extensive green spaces are also suitable for running, cycling and walking.

For a stay planned around a fixed date, Garwolin’s annual event days, held on the third weekend in June, offer a cultural focus. The recurring programme includes concerts by local groups and invited stars, performances by local dance schools, and theatre performances by local and visiting theatre companies. As the programme takes place on a specific weekend, you can plan your trip around this annual event.

Water-based leisure and sports facilities add to the options. Garwolin has a seasonal ice rink and a municipal indoor swimming pool that is open year-round; check current operating conditions before your visit. Garwolanka Aquapark features a 60-metre waterslide, a lazy river, three water jets, three back-massage geysers, three loungers with underwater back massage and three whirlpool tubs. Facilities may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before your visit.

First choose the focus of your trip, then find a suitable hotel for your stay in Garwoliński.
