The Renaissance town hall and Gothic parish church stand side by side on the paved św. Jana Pawła II Square. The 0.3-hectare area is part of Gubin’s historic centre. The museum, bridges, a gate tower and Theatre Island offer further ways to explore the city’s history; a cycling route leads to the former Albert-Koenig Park. For your trip, you can choose between architecture, exhibitions and a longer cycling route.

Museum and City History

The museum room of the Association of Friends of the Gubin Region was established in 2004 at the initiative of its members. Its exhibition covers six themes: prehistory, city history, applied arts, “Places”, honorary citizens of Gubin and “Our City”. The collection ranges from early traces of settlement to topics that explore urban life and its notable figures. If you want to get to know Gubin beyond its individual buildings, you’ll find a thematically organised introduction here.

The museum room is listed as open to visitors on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 2:30 pm. Check visiting hours in advance before planning your museum visit.

Squares, Bridges and Fortifications

The Jungfern Bridge is a small bridge dating from the city’s Renaissance period. It is located at the roundabout where Piastowska and Roosevelt streets meet. Its history includes two alterations: in 1843, the wooden bridge was rebuilt and widened; in 1907, a simple stone structure with wrought-iron railings replaced the wooden construction. These two dates show the structure’s transformation from wood to stone.

The Ostrowska Gate Tower was built around 1530 during modernisation work on the city fortifications, which took place from 1523 to 1544. It is considered the best-preserved element of the medieval fortifications in the Eurotown of Guben-Gubin. The tower is not open to visitors and can only be viewed from the outside. It is therefore an externally visible remnant of the fortifications, rather than a publicly accessible interior.

Theatre Island: Riverside Memorials

The park on Theatre Island is located on a river island near the confluence of the Lubsza and the Lusatian Neisse. The park features a monument to the former city theatre, two sculptures and natural monuments. The theatre opened in 1874 with Goethe’s “Faust” and was destroyed in 1945. Its history is also commemorated by an entrance façade built in the 20th century: it is considered a symbol of the former theatre and preserves original columns and stone steps.

Another historical feature is the monument to Corona Schröter. The opera singer and actress, who was born in Gubin, is commemorated there by a monument unveiled in 1905, of which only part remains. Theatre history, a specific stage work and the memory of an artist come together on the island. The park is also part of the cross-border Green Path; check route conditions locally.

Park and Cycling Route

The former Albert-Koenig Park covers 25 hectares and has a rich variety of trees. It was named after its benefactor, a respected founder and owner of a local daily newspaper, publishing house and printing works. A 21-kilometre cycling route in the Eurotown of Guben-Gubin leads to the park. Along the way, it also follows the western bank of the Neisse, near the ruins of a bridge between Gubin’s former industrial area and its villa district. Check the current route conditions before setting out.

The scale differs considerably from the paved square in the historic centre: the former Albert-Koenig Park covers 25 hectares, compared with 0.3 hectares at św. Jana Pawła II Square. If you prefer architectural history and exhibitions, the museum, bridge and gate tower offer specific points of interest; for a longer cycling route, the park and riverbank are the highlights. On Theatre Island, meanwhile, memories of the former city theatre meet sculptures and natural monuments.
