Stary Zamość brings together clearly distinct walking and cycling themes with tangible traces of the town’s history. Green walking trails lead through the Działy Grabowieckie landscape; the “Stary Zamość – Pańska Dolina” cycling route has four stops, the first of which is a memorial chamber dedicated to Karol Namysłowski. The organ, monument and former manor estate complete the picture of the town.

Walking among ravines and fields

The green walking trail through the Działy Grabowieckie begins in Stary Zamość and runs about nine kilometres east to Majdan Staniecki. Along the way, it passes through ravines with thermophilic and steppe-like vegetation. From a viewpoint on the trail, you can look out over the rolling fields of the Działy Grabowieckie. Ravines and views of the fields provide contrasting landscape highlights along the same walking route. The approximate distance and named endpoint also provide a concrete framework for planning a day trip.

Another green walking trail is called “Po Działach Grabowieckich”: it is 28 kilometres long and begins at the bus stop in Stary Zamość. Compared with the approximately nine-kilometre route to Majdan Staniecki, the stated distances differ considerably. You can therefore plan according to the distance and the named starting or endpoint. Check the current trail markings before setting out on the 28-kilometre route.

Another option is the marked Gościniec Kmicica, lined with old wayside shrines. This route offers a different focus from the trails through the Działy Grabowieckie: here, the shrines along the way are the main theme, while the green walking trails highlight distance, ravines and views of the fields. This provides a concrete alternative for travellers who would rather choose a route based on historic roadside landmarks than on the landscape.

A cycling route with four stops

The “Stary Zamość – Pańska Dolina” cycling route begins in Stary Zamość, passes through Wierzba and has four stops. The first is the “Izba pamięci poświęcona Karolowi Namysłowskiemu,” a memorial chamber with exhibits collected by members of the Orkiestra Włościańska and people associated with the composer. This means the sequence of stops begins with a specific cultural connection to Karol Namysłowski and his circle.

Unlike the walking trails, this cycling route centres on a sequence of stops. The green trails are defined by their distances, whereas the cycling route has four stopping points, beginning with a memorial chamber. The options therefore differ not only in their mode of travel, but also in whether the landscape and route or individual stops shape the travel plan.

Church, monument and former manor estate

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Stary Zamość has a 24-stop organ, built around 1911 and restored several times. For those interested in organ building and church music, the instrument combines a specific number of stops and an approximate date of construction with a history of repeated restoration. It is a distinctive detail of the town’s musical history.

Next to the Gminny Ośrodek Kultury in Stary Zamość stands a monument unveiled in 1983 in honour of those who fell on the battlefields. Its dedication offers a different focus from the organ and church music: public remembrance of the fallen. Its location beside the cultural centre also provides a clearly identified landmark in the town.

The former manor of the Zamoyski Ordynacja lies along the Gościniec Kmicica. Its grounds include a steward’s house, a stable dating from 1900, and the ruins of a wooden four-family house and farm buildings. The different building types show the former manor estate as a complex with administrative, residential and agricultural areas; the ruins are explicitly part of its surviving built heritage.

The marked Gościniec Kmicica is also lined with old wayside shrines. While the manor estate brings together different historic building types, the shrines give this route its own cultural and historical theme. Along with the church and monument, they create a picture of local history made up of distinct, specifically named landmarks.
