Parczew combines striking religious buildings with traces of a medieval town layout and hiking trails of varying lengths and destinations. When planning your visit, you can give different weight to cultural history and outdoor pursuits: the historic town center offers tangible architectural and commemorative history, while the trails described connect Parczew with places beyond the city.

Basilica, Market Square and Medieval Town Layout

The Minor Basilica (Sanctuary of Our Lady Queen of Families) is a Neo-Gothic church with two distinctive towers and five wooden altars. Beside it stands a wooden bell tower dating from 1675, now used as a funeral chapel. The church and tower thus bring together different architectural forms and uses in one place.

Plac Wolności is the market square within the historic medieval town layout. The market hall, built in 1938 to a design by Artur Bernhardt, is located there. Parczew preserves a medieval layout dating from its foundation under Magdeburg law; underground archaeological traces also offer insight into settlement and urban development. In this compact area, architectural history and traces of earlier urban development stand side by side.

Places of Remembrance and Changing Uses of Buildings

A park with a monument to the victims of the Second World War now occupies the site of the former Jewish cemetery. The former synagogue at 1 Piwonia Street was built after 1873 in the eclectic style and used for religious purposes until 1939. The former mikveh is also at this address: it was built in the early 20th century, converted into an event and cinema hall after the Second World War, and is now a wedding venue. These sites tell of former religious functions and subsequent changes, without implying a single, consistent use today.

Another religious landmark is the Way of the Cross beside the Church of St. John the Baptist. Created in 2008, its stone sculptures depict events from the final days of Christ’s life. The sculptures give the route a distinct artistic form.

Compare Hiking Trails by Length and Destination

The green PTTK hiking trail LU-5516 is 29 kilometers long and connects Parczew bus station with Białka. In Parczew, it runs along city streets. The black hiking trail is considerably shorter at 8.9 kilometers; it leads from Milanów to Parczew and enters the city via Władysława Jagiełły Street. The two trails described therefore differ both in length and in whether Parczew is a starting or ending point, or a section of the route. Check the local trail markers before setting out.

Parczew is also historically connected to wider routes: the city lies on the route of the royal Kraków–Lublin–Vilnius Tract, revived as the international Jagiellonian Route. This historical connection complements the practical choice between the hiking trails, whose lengths and endpoints can be compared directly.

An Annual Cultural Event

The annual Jarmark Jagielloński in Parczew features historical reenactments, sculpture and painting, as well as traditional crafts. These include ceramics, pottery and embroidery. Individual editions and their dates vary, so check the event dates for your travel period.
