In Hrubieszów County, early history and a river landscape meet at a precisely named place: in Gródek, the prehistoric hillfort system preserves the remains of the historic Wołyń Castle, one of the so-called Czerwińsk castles. The hillfort is situated at the confluence of the Huczwa and the Bug. These two details tell different stories about the place: the historical significance of a castle and its location at a river confluence.
Museum and architectural history
Dwór Du Chateau has been repurposed as a museum. The Muzeum im. ks. Stanisława Staszica is housed in the main building and the eastern outbuilding. One exhibition is dedicated to the Towarzystwo Rolnicze Hrubieszowskie, founded by Stanisław Staszic. The archaeology department presents exhibitions on prehistoric settlement in the Hrubieszów area. This brings two different historical perspectives together in one museum: the history of an agricultural society and the much earlier settlement of the region.
Other buildings also reflect different historical and religious traditions. The Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Hrubieszów was built in 1875. The image of Matka Boska Sokalska is displayed on the main altar of the Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Sokalskiej. In Werbkowice, the palace complex is a historic residence: the palace, dating from the late 19th century, was created by expanding an earlier Neoclassical manor house. The complex also includes other buildings and an extensive park. Hrubieszowski Dom Kultury is a venue for concerts, picnics and workshops.
The Bug Valley, views and protected landscapes
Hrubieszów County lies in the Bug Valley. Its protected landscapes include Strzelecki Landscape Park and the Nadbużański Protected Landscape Area. A separate landmark in Gródek is the observation tower on the steep slope of Królewski Kąt. From there, you can look out over the Błonia Nadbużańskie ecological reserve. Together, these places showcase different aspects of the landscape: its riverside setting, protected areas and a viewpoint with a named destination in view.
Routes and activities
The information about cycling and hiking routes differs in terms of their direction: all four cycling routes start and end in Hrubieszów, while a 184.5 km hiking trail ends there. Check the trail’s exact name and markings locally. There are also kayaking routes on the Bug in Hrubieszów County.
Separately, Hrubieszowski Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji provides free kayaks and an instructor-supervised climbing wall in spring and summer. Contact the centre before your visit, as seasonal offerings and reservation terms may change. These are distinct activities: kayaking routes on the Bug should not be confused with the facilities offered by the sports and recreation centre.
Special experiences and events
A municipal description dated 31 January 2021 mentions unusual physical and chemical phenomena at the themed village of Einstein na Łące in Stefankowice-Kolonia. It also says the village can be reached by horse-drawn wagon. If you plan to visit, check the current programme in advance.
The county’s environmental programme for 2025–2028 names Biesiada Archeologiczna in Masłomęcz and Granica 835 – Europejskie Dni Dobrosąsiedztwa in Kryłów/Krecziw as major events. Check the dates before making plans. This lets you combine historic sites, landscapes and activities with events, if the dates suit your trip.
