Access to Srebrna Góra Fortress can be described using two specific details. From the pass with the car park, a 1 km paved serpentine road leads through the forest to the fortress; the tourist route on foot takes 15 to 25 minutes. The distance refers to the road, while the time refers to access on foot. Road and walking conditions may change, so check the latest official access information before your visit.
Fortress and Historic Buildings
Srebrna Góra Fortress is a unique heritage site in Europe. Forteczny Park Kulturowy was established in 2002 to comprehensively protect and revitalise the fortress, taking into account the landscape values of its surroundings.
Fort Ostróg adds the role of an auxiliary fort to the story of military history: it was built from 1766 to 1771 to protect the main fortress on the other side of the pass.
Church, Culture and Railway
The Evangelical church in Srebrna Góra was built between 1578 and 1592. The interior of the former church now serves as Srebrnogórska Przestrzeń Artystyczna, a venue for exhibitions and concerts. The same building thus brings together its historic construction period and a present-day cultural use; its architecture and cultural history offer two perspectives on the same place.
The Srebrnogórski Viaduct was built in 1901 and is 28 metres high. It adds a railway heritage landmark to the town’s architectural history. The history of the area therefore spans the late 16th-century church, the 18th-century military complex and the viaduct of 1901. The cultural park, established in 2002, added an approach focused on protecting and revitalising the fortress and the landscape values.
The railway also has a technical distinction: on the Srebrna Góra–Wolibórz section, a rack rail was used because of the steep gradient, to prevent the train from slipping while climbing. This resulted in the only rack railway in present-day Poland. The technical connection is clear: the rack rail was a response to the gradient of the route.
Routes and Activities
The former Sowiogórska Railway line has been preserved to this day; the blue and green hiking trails also run along one section. The “Zębata” educational trail was laid out in 2002 through the most valuable section of the mountain in terms of nature and history. Check local trail conditions when making specific hiking plans.
The enduro trails in Srebrna Góra are part of Strefa MTB Sudety. This affiliation may change if trails are modified, so check the latest information about the route network before planning.
