Jawor brings together ecclesiastical architectural history, town hall architecture, a rectangular market square with arcades, and a historic gingerbread tradition. The Regional Museum also focuses on the history of the town and its surroundings. You can choose the focus of your stay according to your interests: would you like to look at architectural forms, understand the town’s layout, or get to know Jawor through its food culture and regional history? If you are looking for a hotel in Jawor, you can first decide which of these perspectives you would like to shape your stay.

Churches and Town Hall

The Church of the Holy Spirit in Jawor was built in 1654–1655 as a rectangular, three-aisled basilica with a shortened, three-sided choir. A three-aisled building is divided into three aisles; the rectangular floor plan describes the overall shape, while the shortened, three-sided choir forms a distinct part of the structure. The construction dates and design offer different perspectives: the dates place the building in the mid-17th century, while the floor plan and shape of the choir describe its architectural layout. This makes it possible to understand the building not only by its name, but also through specific features of its form.

The Church of Peace in Jawor was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. The town hall is a Neo-Renaissance building; its secular stained-glass windows are considered the largest in Silesia. Jawor thus brings together a UNESCO World Heritage listing, a named architectural style and a notable feature of its interior.

Market Square and Arcades

Jawor’s rectangular market square measures 140 × 65 metres and is surrounded by townhouses with arcades. Its longer side is more than twice as long as its shorter side, making its elongated shape easy to grasp without losing sight of the surrounding buildings. The dimensions of the square and its arcades answer two different questions: what are the proportions of the urban space, and what defines its spatial character? The arcades are part of the townhouses around the square and thus contribute to its design. For travellers interested in historic urban form, Jawor offers another architectural focus here, alongside its church architecture and town hall.

Gingerbread as a Local Tradition

Gingerbread has been baked in Jawor since at least the mid-18th century. A beehive motif on the façade of a house on the market square symbolises this tradition. This connects the long history of gingerbread-making with a specific motif in the urban landscape. It offers you a distinct way to explore local food culture, different from the architecture but also linked to the market square.

Town and Regional History

The Jawor Regional Museum is housed in a former Bernardine monastery and displays exhibits on the history of Jawor and its surroundings. It complements the individual architectural themes with a broader historical perspective: the focus is not only on Jawor, but also on the surrounding area. The former monastery provides the architectural setting, while the exhibits set the thematic focus. If you would like to explore the history of the town and its surroundings together, this offers a distinct perspective alongside looking at individual buildings.
