The Widawa Valley in the south of Oleśnicki County offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and kayaking. When planning, you can choose between a marked cycling route, a longer water route and excursions to historic sites, depending on what matters most for your stay.

Water and Cycling Routes

The green-marked “Trasa Doliny Widawy” cycling route is about 30 km long and starts at Bierutów PKP railway station on Kolejowa Street. Route markings and conditions may change; check the latest conditions before setting out. The Widawa water route offers a different perspective: it runs for more than 40 kilometres from Bierutów towards Wrocław. In Bierutów, there is a prepared launch site for kayaks on the Widawa kayaking route. Conditions on the river may vary seasonally.

The two routes differ in mode of travel and length: the cycling route is about 30 km long, while the water route extends for more than 40 kilometres. This makes it easy to decide first whether you would prefer to cycle along a marked route or plan a stretch on the water.

Trails, Recreation and Accommodation in Twardogóra

The municipality of Twardogóra has hiking, cycling, recreation, walking and educational trails, as well as an equestrian trail. The recreation trail by the Skorynia River lies in two areas adjoining the river. Walking and jogging paths run along both sides of the river; there is also a children’s playground and a boules area.

At Zalew Stradomia, there is a 300-metre-long sandy beach, a supervised bathing area and a seasonal kayak and pedal boat rental. Other facilities include a beach volleyball court, a basketball court, boules courts and a children’s playground with a sandbox. Facilities may be seasonal; check what is currently available before your visit.

The red “Duża pętla twardogórska” cycling route is 46.5 km long and starts at the Gminny Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji in Twardogóra. Bicycles and necessary equipment such as helmets, pumps and child seats can be rented there; accommodation is also available. If you would like to use these options for your plans, confirm their current availability in advance.

Architecture and History

In Oleśnica, the Castle of the Dukes of Oleśnica, also known as Oleśnica Castle or the Castle in Oleśnica, is considered the city’s most valuable architectural monument and one of the largest and best-preserved castles in Lower Silesia. Over the course of its history, it existed as a medieval castle complex, a Gothic castle and a Renaissance residence of the dukes, and was modernised several times.

The Minor Basilica of St John the Apostle in Oleśnica is considered one of the oldest churches in Silesia. A chained library is housed in the same church; Karl II founded it in 1594, and it remains in the church today. According to J. Sinapius, Oleśnica’s new brick town hall was built in 1410.

Bierutów also has historic buildings with clear dates: its fortification walls probably date from the first half of the 14th century; much of their original course has been preserved. Today, only the tower, without its roof, remains of the town hall. It probably dates from the first half of the 15th century.

Collections and Nature

The Museum of the Twardogóra Region holds prints, documents, coins, artefacts of material culture and edged weapons. These historical mementos have been collected since 1957 at the initiative of Alojzy Zielecki, a history teacher and later school principal. The exhibition opened to the public on 15 February 1977 and was named “Muzeum Szkolne Ziemi Twardogórskiej”. Check the current admission arrangements separately before visiting.

Twardogóra also has a private collection of 30 fragments of the Berlin Wall. Ludwik Wasecki assembled them and made them accessible to the public; availability may change. It is advisable to check before visiting here, too. For nature lovers, parts of the Natura 2000 programme—European protected areas—lie within the municipality of Twardogóra. The “Torfowisko koło Grabowna” nature reserve lies between Grabowno Wielkie and Twardogóra and was designated a nature reserve in 1980. If you are planning a specific nature trip, check the current boundaries of the protected areas.

When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide on your preferred location and activity focus: Twardogóra has trails, recreation areas and accommodation options mentioned at the cycling route’s starting point; Bierutów combines named cycling and water routes with historic buildings, while Oleśnica offers an architectural focus with its castle and basilica.
