Przecznica offers several perspectives on the history of the village: visible traces of mining, a mining heritage trail and a culinary connection. Its history encompasses individual sites as well as a development shaped by the mining and smelting centre in Przecznica and Gierczyn. You can explore these subjects separately during your stay: a mine represents a specific period of operation, while the trail provides geographical orientation through its route.

Landscape at the Foot of the Jizera Mountains

Przecznica lies in a broad valley at the foot of the Jizera Mountains, along the Kwisa River. This setting gives the village a clear geographical context: the valley, the edge of the mountains and the river describe the landscape, while shafts and adits point to its former use. If you take both landscape and cultural history into account when choosing a destination, these are two different aspects of the same place. The geographical setting can be summarised briefly; its history is revealed through its periods and visible remains.

Mining in Several Historical Stages

The history of mining can be viewed in several stages. In the mid-16th century, deposits of cobalt and tin ore were discovered in the vicinity of Przecznica. By 1616, 17 adits had been created in the area. The former “Św. Maria-Anna” cobalt ore mine was later in operation from 1769 to 1840. The figure for the adits refers to the surrounding area; the years of operation refer to this specifically named mine. Taken together, the dates trace a sequence from early ore discoveries through the creation of the adits to the operation of a single cobalt ore mine. The development of Przecznica was significantly influenced by the establishment of a large mining and smelting centre in Przecznica and Gierczyn.

Visible Traces and Bat Conservation

Depressions marking three shafts are visible at “Św. Maria-Anna.” Traces of earlier mining in the form of adits can also still be seen in Przecznica. These two features illustrate different mining remains: the shaft depressions on the one hand and the adits on the other. The entrances to the mining sites “Fryderyk Wilhelm,” “Św. Maria-Anna” and “Trzech Braci” are secured with openable grilles made of galvanised steel pipes to protect bat habitats. Nature conservation is therefore also part of the context for these historic sites.

The Mining Heritage Trail and Its Waypoints

The above-ground mining heritage trail “Śladami dawnego górnictwa kruszców” offers another, spatial perspective. It runs from the valley of Krobicki Potok to Przecznicki Potok, follows the Kamienicki Ridge at its lowest section, crosses the Dzieża stream and ends in Przecznica. The waterways, ridge and destination help you follow the route. This answers a different planning question from the operating dates of an individual mine: here the focus is on the route, while those dates concern the history of a specific site. In 2024, the Municipality of Mirsk commissioned maintenance of the above-ground trail and had its entire signage replaced. If you plan to include the trail in your itinerary, check its current condition before your visit.

A Culinary Connection

The name “Przecznicki Camembert” is also part of the local profile: the cheese is known as a local product associated with Przecznica. It adds a culinary connection to the village’s history alongside mining and landscape.
