Chmieleń combines architectural and cultural history with a location between two named landscape areas. The parish church of St. Nicholas, half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, and small chapels and roadside figures give the village a variety of architectural features. There are also different points of reference for hiking: one route starts in Chmieleń and specifies its length and approximate walking time; another runs from Rębiszów to Lwówek Śląski through the village.

Location between two landscape areas

Chmieleń lies about 4 km south of Lubomierz on the Jelenia Góra–Zgorzelec route. The village is situated between Przedgórze Rębiszowskie and Wzniesienia Radoniowskie at an elevation of 380 to 460 m. Its location can therefore be described both by its approximate distance from Lubomierz and by the two landscape areas. The elevation range adds another dimension to this geographical description, rather than giving a single value.

Church and local architectural heritage

The parish church of St. Nicholas (Kościół parafialny św. Mikołaja) was built in the 15th century in the Gothic style. The church contains Renaissance tomb slabs dating from 1695. Its furnishings include Baroque and Neoclassical elements: an altar, a baptismal font, a pulpit, stained-glass windows, sculptures and paintings. The building brings together different historical and artistic aspects. Its construction dates to the period of Gothic church architecture, while the tomb slabs are dated 1695 and the furnishings incorporate two other styles.

The half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries represent a different architectural style. They offer a distinct architectural feature alongside the parish church. The village landscape also includes 29 small chapels and roadside figures. The church, houses, chapels and figures differ in form and scale, representing various aspects of local architecture and culture. Those interested in architectural history will find more than a single type of building here: religious architecture, half-timbered houses from two centuries, and smaller religious forms stand side by side.

Hiking trails and planning your time

The blue Chmieleń–Lubomierz hiking trail is 5.2 km long. The walk from Chmieleń takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The distance and approximate duration provide a practical guide for planning this hike. As conditions on hiking trails can change, check the current trail conditions before setting out.

Another blue hiking trail runs from Rębiszów to Lwówek Śląski and passes through Chmieleń. The routes relate to the village in different ways: the Chmieleń–Lubomierz hike starts here and has a specified distance and walking time, while the Rębiszów–Lwówek Śląski route passes through Chmieleń on its way between the two named towns. If an approximate walking time is important for your plans, the trail to Lubomierz provides a specific estimate. The other route places Chmieleń along a trail between Rębiszów and Lwówek Śląski.
