Chełmiec lies at the foot of the Chełmy Hills, on the Starucha stream, six kilometres west of Jawor. Two themes give the village a clear profile to help you decide whether to visit: its history as a village and estate, and the trails that take in mining history and other places. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Chełmiec, you can weigh up whether the village layout or the routes is the deciding factor. Its geographical location provides a first point of reference; the sections below show the different points of interest the village offers for cultural and walking interests.

Village Layout and Early History

Chełmiec is first mentioned in 1202 under the name “Chelmecz”. The village has the layout of a green village: it is shaped by a long, spindle-shaped green that ends at the church and cemetery in the southwest. A village green is the central open space around which this type of village is arranged; here, its shape and endpoint describe the layout of the village, not just a single building. Historically, Chełmiec belonged to the Cistercian Order of Lubiąż. The early mention, settlement layout and affiliation with the order are thus distinct historical points of reference.

Mining History on Two Levels

The “Śladami kopaczy” educational trail offers a tangible link to mining history: it runs for 5.0 km between Chełmiec and Raczyce, following traces of polymetallic mining from the late 19th century. Its route, endpoints and historical focus are therefore clearly defined. Remains of mining adits have also been preserved in Chełmiec. They add another distinct aspect to the history of mining in the village. The 1202 name and the mining traces from the late 19th century represent two clearly different periods in the village’s history.

Compare Hiking Trails by Route

The hiking trails can be distinguished by the role Chełmiec plays along each route. The Brzeżyny Trail runs from Złotoryja via Leszczyna, Chełmiec and Myślibórz to Grobla and Bolków; Chełmiec lies between Leszczyna and Myślibórz. The second route of the Kopaczy Trail starts in Chełmiec and runs via Jerzyków, Myślinów, Nowa Wieś Wielka, Lipa and Radzimowice to Wojcieszów. This gives you a concrete point of distinction for orientation: on the first route, Chełmiec is one stop on the journey from Złotoryja to Bolków; on the second, it is the starting point for the sequence of places listed. Together with the 5.0 km educational trail between Chełmiec and Raczyce, this gives three distinct ways to explore: a trail focused on mining and two routes that pass through several places. Before setting out, we recommend checking the current condition of the trails.

Manor Farm, Park and Palace

The manor farm in Chełmiec included an extensive, roughly elongated rectangular courtyard. The landscaped park of the estate lay south of the palace. A palace stood in the centre of Chełmiec; it was destroyed after 1945. The spatial details distinguish the courtyard from the location of the park, while the destruction of the palace also marks a historical break.
