Celestynów can be explored through two distinct reminders of its local history: a tall metal cross donated by residents and a windmill used by farmers from the village and surrounding villages. The municipality of Sławno, to which it belongs, offers further perspectives—from rural architecture to regional geology. This gives you a choice when planning your trip: would you like to focus on Celestynów’s own history, or also include cultural and visitor attractions across the municipality?

Cross and Windmill: Local History in Celestynów

A tall metal cross donated by residents of Celestynów stands at the roadside where a county road meets a local road. Both its precise location and its donation by the local community are part of the village’s history.

The windmill, built in 1914 by Franciszek Wróblewski, offers a different perspective. Farmers from Celestynów and the surrounding villages used it to grind grain into flour and animal feed. Its use therefore extended beyond a single village and served several communities. The mill remained standing until the 1960s. Compared with the metal cross, it tells less about a donation and more about agricultural work and its importance to Celestynów and the surrounding villages.

Architecture and Tradition in the Sławno Municipality

The Niebowo open-air museum is located in Wincentynów, within the Sławno municipality. Its collection includes an almost century-old thatched cottage, a cellar built of fieldstones, a small barn, and a shelter. The buildings display furnishings typical of the Opoczno region, as well as exhibits on agriculture, carpentry, and weaving. This broadens the focus beyond milling to rural ways of living and other crafts.

The Sławno municipality also invites visitors to follow a trail through its territory and learn about local traditions and faith. Unlike the open-air museum, the focus here is not a fixed collection of buildings and exhibits but a themed route across the municipality. For trip planning, these offer two different ways to explore the municipality’s culture: a look at the history of living and working in Niebowo, and a trail focused on tradition and faith.

Geopark and Harvest Festival

Another attraction in the Sławno municipality is the geopark. Its features include a viewing terrace overlooking an open-pit mine, a large cast of an ichthyosaur, telescopes, and benches. An exhibition pavilion displays fossils that are 148 million years old; the site also offers activities for children and parking. This adds themes of geological history to the architecture and village history. If you plan to visit, it is advisable to check current opening hours and access arrangements.

Regional cuisine and community village life also come to life through a specific event. The municipal harvest festival took place in Sławno on 6 September 2015 and was described at the time as an annual event. At the stalls of the 28 participating villages, including Celestynów, visitors could sample traditional regional dishes prepared by local women’s associations using time-honoured recipes. Unlike the local history told by the cross and windmill, the festival showcases regional cuisine through a specific event and the participation of many villages.
