Niepołomice combines royal architectural history and regional material culture with trails leading from the market square towards the forest. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose between a cultural focus in the town and nature-themed activities in the surrounding area. The castle, church, Regional Museum Room and observatory each have their own appeal; routes range from an organised town tour to trails along the forest edge and a horse-riding route in the area.

Royal and regional history

The Royal Castle in Niepołomice was built in the 1340s at the initiative of King Casimir the Great. At the beginning of the 16th century, it was converted into a royal residence in the Renaissance style under King Sigismund the Old. These two milestones trace the castle’s story from its construction to its later use as a residence. The Muzeum Niepołomickie is located in the castle, bringing the castle and museum together in one place.

Another historical highlight is the Church of the Ten Thousand Martyrs. It was built between 1350 and 1358 as a Gothic church and founded by King Casimir the Great. This religious building complements the history of the royal castle; the foundation links both sites to Casimir the Great.

The Regional Museum Room focuses on material culture: across 120 m², it displays around 400 exhibits from villages and small towns, as well as from the affluent middle class. This offers a different perspective from the castle and church. Rather than the history of residences and architecture, the focus here is on objects and their connection to different social groups. If you are interested in the town’s cultural history, the Regional Museum Room offers a distinct perspective alongside the historic buildings.

Town tour and trails towards the forest

The Muzeum Niepołomickie offers organised groups a one-hour town tour covering 1 km. It goes via Podzamcze, the statue of King Casimir the Great, the market square and the Justyna statue, then continues to the Church of the Ten Thousand Martyrs, the town hall, the park and the castle. The intended audience is clearly defined: the tour is for organised groups. One hour and 1 km give this activity a specific timeframe and distance.

A route into the Niepołomice Forest also starts at the market square. It follows Bocheńska Street, passes the parish church and reaches the car park on Road No. 75 at the forest edge. The two routes differ in their destinations: the town tour passes several stops and ends at the castle, while the route towards the forest ends at the car park on the forest edge. This helps you distinguish the town’s cultural attractions from a route into nature.

In the nearby area, close to Szarów, Dąbrowa, Gruszki and Staniątki, an approximately 8 km horse-riding route runs exclusively along forest roads and tracks. It offers a different perspective on the landscape from the town tour and the route from the market square to the forest edge. If you would like to include these trails in your plans, note that this horse-riding route runs through the area around the places listed.

Astronomy as another highlight

The youth observatory in Niepołomice, named after Kazimierz Kordylewski, offers sky observations, computer simulations, and demonstrations and video presentations about astronomical phenomena. These different formats make astronomy a distinct activity alongside town history and nature trails. Check the latest programme details before your visit to make sure they fit your plans.
