Sromowce Wyżne offers several themes to choose from: rafting through the Dunajec Gorge, a stairway route at Calvary, a hike to Macelak, and local history and culture. When choosing Sromowce Wyżne as a base for an overnight stay, it helps to distinguish between these highlights. When weighing up rafting and hiking, the exact starting point, route and differing time estimates all matter.

Rafting and Hiking Trails

The hamlet of Kąty in Sromowce Wyżne is the embarkation point for rafting through the Dunajec Gorge. The Polish Pieniny Rafting Association also lists Sromowce Wyżne as the embarkation point for the Dunajec rafting trip.

The Stations of the Cross route to Sołtysia Skała at the Calvary of Sromowce Wyżne climbs more than 150 gravel and wooden steps that wind through the forest seven times. Conditions may vary; check them before setting out.

The hiking route from Sromowce Wyżne to Macelak is 5.6 km long and gains a total of 490 metres in elevation. The outward journey takes 2 hours and 15 minutes, and the return journey takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. The return journey is half an hour shorter according to the time estimates; together, the two times add up to four hours.

The two walking options differ in how they can be planned: the steps and route are characteristic of the Stations of the Cross, while the Macelak hike also has a specified distance, elevation gain and times for each direction. This makes it possible to decide whether the stairway route or a quantified time and elevation profile is the more important factor.

Local History and Language

The history of the village is revealed through an early documentary mention and a later church building. Sromowce Wyżne was originally called Przekop; it was mentioned in a document in 1323 and was the first village founded by the Poor Clares under Magdeburg law. The brick Church of St. Stanislaus was built in 1875. The dates refer to different historical events: 1323 marks the documentary mention, while 1875 marks the construction of the church. There are 552 years between the documentary mention and the church’s construction.

Language is also part of local culture: a Podhale dialect with strong Slovak, Hungarian and Romanian influences is spoken in Sromowce Wyżne. This adds a linguistic tradition to the architectural history.

Views and Regional Themes

From the last stations of the Calvary, you can see the Pieniny, Magura Spiska, the Spisko-Gubałowskie Foothills and the Tatras. The view thus encompasses several clearly named mountain and foothill areas.

The exhibition pavilion of the Pieniński Park Narodowy in Kąty is one of the national park’s five exhibition pavilions. Its exhibition covers the nature of the Pieniny and its protection, as well as the region’s history and traditions. Visitors who want to explore nature and regional culture together will find both themes reflected in the exhibition.
