A memorial stone on Gronik, historic beehives and slopes in the Beskid give Spytkowice several distinct reasons to visit. The themes range from local history and art to winter sports. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the different locations and their respective conditions in mind.

Beskid: Slopes and Cross-Country Skiing

The Beskid ski area has four slopes of easy and intermediate difficulty. The area also includes a separate practice slope for young beginners. It is wide and flat, set apart from the rest of the ski area, and has an 80-metre-long conveyor belt. This means the designated slopes and the separately described practice area can be seen as distinct parts of the offering, rather than being grouped together under one difficulty level.

Another option is the cross-country ski trails: they are two to five kilometres long, suitable for beginners and advanced skiers, and offer views of Babia Góra. They are prepared when there is sufficient natural snow. This distinguishes the trails from the ski area’s slopes both in terms of activity and the specific snow conditions stated for them. If you are weighing up different types of winter sport, you can use this information to help you choose.

Memorial Sites and History

The memorial stone on Gronik commemorates the place where Lieutenant Stefaniszyn lost his life. It is also a site for local patriotic commemorations. The stone can be reached via a path near the cemetery; after the first turn off the road, there are about 700 metres left to walk. This information makes the final stretch a concrete part of the directions, but says nothing about the path’s surface or accessibility.

The parish cemetery in Spytkowice contains the grave and tomb monument of Lieutenant Tadeusz Stefaniszyn, who fell on 2 September 1939. The battle trail of the 12th Infantry Regiment provides another historical connection: it starts at Primary School No. 2 in Spytkowice Dolne and ends at the cemetery in Spytkowice. Its route passes through valleys along the Polish defensive line of September 1939. The memorial stone, cemetery and trail thus offer different ways of remembering: a specific memorial site, a grave with a monument, and a route with a historical connection.

Beekeeping Exhibits and Local Art

Behind the municipal office is an open-air museum with historic beekeeping exhibits. Many of the historic beehives there are more than 150 years old; Józef Różański began collecting them in 1975. The beehives give the open-air museum a clearly defined theme. The Pasieka Pod Lasem is separate from this: it includes the Gallery of St Ambrose, with more than 100 works of professional, amateur, folk and children’s art.

The Izba Pamięci Narodowej also focuses on local history. It is located in Primary School No. 1, opposite the church, and opened in 1971. Its collection includes the Virtuti Militari Cross awarded posthumously to the school’s namesake, photographs, his business card and sports medals. Spytkowice therefore offers different points of interest: historic mementos, a beekeeping collection and a gallery featuring a wide variety of artworks.

Annual Stations of the Cross and Views

Every year on the anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s death, residents of Spytkowice and nearby places take part in a Stations of the Cross procession. It is led ceremonially by parish priest Józef Hajnos and the Spytkowice branch of the Związek Podhalan. This is a recurring local occasion alongside the commemorations on Gronik, not a general programme of activities for visitors.

At different times of year, Karczma widokowa na stoku offers views of Babia Góra, Spytkowice, Jordanów and the Tatras. Visibility depends on the weather. Together with the routes, memorial sites and collections described above, this paints a picture of a place that is not defined by a single activity: what appeals to you will depend on whether you are more interested in history and local culture or in the offerings at the Beskid.
