The village is home to the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary; just outside it are rocks overlooking the eastern part of Podhale. There are also trails with different routes: a hiking trail to the castle in Niedzica and the Szlak wokół Tatr. A stay can therefore focus on architectural history, views, or outdoor activity—each has a specific point of interest.
Rocks and Views East of the Village
The built-up area of Gronków lies at an elevation of 580 to 650 m above sea level. To the east of the village, Cisowa Skałka rises to 685 m, placing the rock above the stated elevation range of the built-up area. Mała Skałka is also known as Grzebieniowa. Both rocks lie just outside the village.
Steep red limestone rocks rise among fields. They support natural vegetation, offer a place to relax, and provide a viewpoint overlooking the eastern part of Podhale. Limestone, fields, and vegetation shape the landscape, while the viewpoint directs your gaze toward a specific part of the region.
Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
The Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Gronków was built in the 18th century as a subsidiary chapel of the parish in Szaflary. It became an independent parish only in the 20th century. Its historical context therefore includes both its origins as a chapel and the parish’s later independence.
Architecturally, the church is considered an example of Podhale’s sacred architecture. It was built using log construction without nails and was extended and renovated several times, while retaining its original character. Its construction and development offer two different perspectives on the building: how it was built and the changes it underwent over time.
Hiking and Cycling Trails
The green hiking trail at the foot of the ascent runs from Szaflary to the castle in Niedzica, passing through the Pieniny Spiskie along the way. The route therefore has a named starting point, passes through a specific landscape region, and ends at a clearly defined destination.
The Szlak wokół Tatr runs from Gronków across the gently rolling plain of the Nowy Targ Basin. Its section between Gronków and Nowa Biała is considered scenic throughout. During the second phase of the project, construction was completed on nearly 13 km of cycling routes on the Szlak wokół Tatr, from Gronków to Dursztyn.
The trail descriptions differ in their destinations and landscapes: the hiking trail ends at the castle in Niedzica, while the Szlak wokół Tatr focuses on the plain and various route sections. Before setting out today, it is best to check the current condition of the trail you plan to use.
