Churches, chapels and a monument bearing the names of twelve people who were killed give Jawornik a distinctly historical character. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Jawornik, the town’s history can help you decide whether a culturally focused stay suits your trip. Local traces of the past range from a church tax register dating to 1325 to the rebuilding of a chapel in spring 2002.
Churches and Traces of the Past
The three-storey tower of the parish church “Kościół Parafialny pw. Podwyższenia Krzyża Świętego” is listed in the heritage register. The wooden parish church “Kościół Parafialny pw. Znalezienia i Podwyższenia Krzyża św.” dates from the 17th century and was moved to Kraków-Krzesławice in 1982. The tower, enclosure and surrounding trees remained at its historic site. The history of the building can therefore be traced both through the relocated church and through the features left at its former site.
Another historical marker is the church tax register of 1325, which records the parish of Jawornik and its priest, ks. Mikołaj. The entry offers a glimpse of the town’s ecclesiastical history in the Middle Ages, while the relocated wooden church recalls the local history of the 17th and 20th centuries.
Memorial Sites and Chapels
The monument to the murdered residents of Jawornik stands at the site of the crime, on the road towards Sułkowice. It bears the names of the twelve people killed in the crime on 6 April 1944. Its roadside location and the remembrance of those named give this place a clear historical context.
At the cemetery entrance stands a freestanding wayside chapel with a statue of Saint Stanislaus on a plinth erected in 1907. Its inscription commemorates the old Church of Saint Stanislaus, which burned down on 2 June 1904. It also gives 8 May 1907 as the date when the statue was erected using contributions from the local parish community. The inscription thus links the fire that destroyed the old church with the erection of the statue.
The Bugaj chapel in Jawornik was built in 1908 by the Feliks family in gratitude for their daughter Anna’s recovery from an illness. In spring 2002, residents of Bugaj rebuilt the chapel at its original site. The family’s reason for building it and the later community-led reconstruction are both part of the same local history.
