In Kozłów, the faintly visible earthworks of a fortified manor meet a rich church history. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is also the endpoint of a described route, where a visit is planned. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the sights in the village and the stops in the surrounding area: in addition to Tczyca, the route description mentions woodland, a reservoir and Tunel. This lets you decide whether to focus on Kozłów’s history or include the wider route in your plans.

Traces of the fortified manor

In the last quarter of the 14th century, Piotr z Kozłowa and his son Mszczuj built a fortified manor with a chapel in Kozłów. The earthworks of the site are faintly visible. The central earthwork was about 55 × 35 m and elliptical. An oval addition measuring about 23 × 18 m adjoined it to the south; a ditch 14–16 m wide separated the two. The southern addition is smaller than the central earthwork in both stated dimensions. Their shapes and arrangement give the manor complex a clearly defined layout: a central area, a southern addition and the ditch between them.

Church history in Kozłów

The church’s history includes several building phases. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Kozłów was built on the foundations of earlier wooden churches. The year 1901 marks another historical milestone in Kozłów: construction of a new brick church began then, and the previous wooden church was demolished in the same year. The described route ends in Kozłów at the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and includes a visit there. Check access in advance if you plan to make this a definite stop.

Other stops in the surrounding area

A cycling route passes through Tczyca. The sightseeing described there includes a fortified settlement site and the Neo-Gothic Church of St Giles. This stop thus brings together two distinct historical features: a fortified settlement and Neo-Gothic church architecture.

A woodland section of the described route leads to Biała Góra, described as the highest point in the Miechów Upland at 414 m above sea level. The route also passes through the Biała Góra and Kępie nature reserves. A named high point and protected woodland areas thus complement the historical stops.

A man-made reservoir lies along the route, 1.5 km past Tczyca, on the right-hand side of the road. The route also reaches Tunel. There you will find the railway tunnel that the route description calls the longest in Poland. The reservoir and tunnel broaden the range of sights beyond manor and church history.

Choose the focus of your trip

How far you want your visit to extend beyond Kozłów is key to choosing your destination. A stay focused on the village’s history centres on the manor traces and the church; including the wider route adds stops in the surrounding area.
