The lake, landscape and local history give Steklin several distinct travel highlights. The glacial Jezioro Steklińskie and activities on the water offer a different focus from the late Classicist manor house, its park and the historical references to the hillfort and settlement. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether nature and water or architecture and history should play a greater part in your trip.

Lake and protected landscape

Jezioro Steklińskie was formed during the Ice Age and is fed by the Łubianka River. The area around the lake offers a beautiful view of the lake’s pradolina. Boating and kayaking are possible on the lake. Thus, both the lake’s formation and its inflow, as well as activities on the water, are among the local highlights. If you are planning a boat or kayak trip, check the arrangements in advance.

A landscape protection zone was established in the area of Jezioro Steklin on 3 February 1994. The reasons given were its aesthetic and scenic, as well as natural and cultural, values. The original justification therefore went beyond the landscape alone: natural and cultural values also played a role.

Local history and manor park

Steklin is documented as a settlement from at least the 14th century. The site was already mentioned as a hillfort in the 10th century. The two dates refer to different historical aspects: the earlier reference concerns the hillfort, while the settlement’s history dates back to at least the 14th century. The history of the place therefore cannot be reduced to the manor house alone.

The manor house in Steklin is a late Classicist building dating from the mid-19th century. Its park is laid out as a landscape park and covers 8 ha. It contains 52 species of trees and shrubs. The building and the park describe different aspects of the estate: the manor house can be classified by its style and date, while the park is defined by its design, area and tree and shrub species. Visitors interested in architecture can consider the house in terms of its period and style; the details about the park add the landscape design to this picture.

Nature trail and cycle route

The approximately 42 km-long “Szlakiem natury-szlakiem przeszłości” nature trail has a rest area in Steklin with shelters, tables and benches, bicycle racks, waste bins and information boards about nature and history. The area has various facilities for a break, while the boards bring nature and local history into the visit. Check the current condition of the facilities before your visit.

Steklin’s cycling history also includes the PTTK “Wokół pradoliny jeziora Steklińskiego” cycle route. It opened on 10 May 2009 and passed through Steklin. If you would like to ride the route today, check its current course and signage beforehand.
