Chełmno’s medieval heritage can be read in the city’s very layout: the Old Town’s grid plan and the almost completely preserved brick city walls shape the view of the place. Other highlights include a viewpoint at the parish church, a museum in the town hall, park paths and other themed attractions. You can tailor your stay around local history, views, walks or longer excursions.
Cityscape and fortifications
The Old Town’s medieval grid plan is one of Chełmno’s defining features. The almost completely preserved brick city walls are 2,270 metres long and were built between the mid-13th and mid-14th centuries. These features offer different perspectives on the city: the grid plan reflects the layout of its streets, while the walls represent its fortifications. This lets you explore Chełmno not only through individual buildings but also through its historic urban structure.
Views, town hall and history
The north-western spire of the parish church is 60 metres high. From the viewing terrace, you can see Chełmno and its medieval grid of streets, as well as Świecie, the Chełmno region and the lower Vistula Valley. The cityscape and wider regional views come together here. It is worth checking the viewing terrace’s current opening times before your visit.
The Muzeum Ziemi Chełmińskiej is housed in Chełmno’s town hall. Its permanent exhibitions cover the history of Chełmno and the surgeon Ludwik Rydygier. This combines local history with a biographical perspective. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current visitor information in advance.
Miniatures and park paths
Since 2013, the Park Miniatur Zamków Krzyżackich in Rydygiera Park has displayed nine medieval castle models at a scale of 1:30. They include models of castles in Malbork, Toruń, Radzyń Chełmiński and Papowo Biskupie. The shared scale gives you a way to compare the castles depicted without confusing the models with the buildings themselves. The miniature collection adds another perspective on medieval architecture alongside the city walls and museum.
Chełmno’s two Planty parks, with their shady paths, are popular places for residents to stroll. The small “Studzienka” chapel also stands in the southern part of the New Planty. This gives the park paths and one small building their own place alongside the major historical themes. The Planty are ideal for walks, while the walls, town hall and tower draw attention to the city’s structure and cultural history.
Tours and events calendar
Osada Rycerska is a tourist and educational site featuring, among other things, a torture chamber and an archery range. Check visitor information in advance before adding the site to your plans. For a longer outing, the Chełmno PTTK guide association offers walking and cycling tours several kilometres long. Themed routes include “Szlakiem Panoramy Chełmna” and “Szlak Fortyfikacji Chełmna”. These longer walking and cycling routes offer an alternative to strolls through the Planty.
The events calendar adds another distinctive feature: Walentynki Chełmińskie, Valentine’s Day celebrations, take place in Chełmno every year. If you plan to travel for the event, check the dates for the relevant year before booking.
When choosing a hotel in Chełmno, you can start by considering which themes you want to shape your stay: local history, views, park paths, miniature models, longer tours or Walentynki Chełmińskie. This way, you can search for accommodation based on the interests you want to pursue in Chełmno.
