Stęszew offers several ways to explore architectural history, the townscape and nature. The Regional Museum, the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Marian Sanctuary represent different historical themes; the remains of a castle survive on Pańska Góra. There is also an educational, nature and cultural trail and a self-guided discovery route through the streets. When planning your stay, you can therefore first decide whether to focus on buildings and collections or on trails and landscape.

Buildings and History in Stęszew

The Regional Museum is located at Rynek 8 in an 18th-century building. It is the town’s second-oldest building, after the parish church, and also its last surviving arcaded house. The museum currently has about 5,000 exhibits. Most were gathered through donations from former and current residents of the Stęszew municipality. This brings the history of a distinctive building and a collection connected to the municipality together in one place.

The Church of the Holy Trinity reflects several phases of construction: it was originally made of wood, then rebuilt in the Gothic style around 1468, and later remodeled in the Baroque style. The Marian Sanctuary offers a different point of reference in time. It dates from 1905 and houses a late Gothic sculpture from the 16th century. The building and sculpture therefore belong to different centuries.

The remains on Pańska Góra also point to an earlier era. A 14th-century castle once stood there; it was destroyed during the Swedish Deluge. The 14th-century castle predates the church’s Gothic phase around 1468.

Trails, Townscape and River

The “Wokół Stęszewa” educational, nature and cultural trail starts in the town center at the tourist information point on ul. Poznańska. A map of the trail is available; check in advance whether it can still be accessed. Since local signage and access conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before setting out. Use the tourist information point as a starting point for orientation, and check the map and local signage before you leave.

Another way to get to know the townscape is the “Stęszew z polotem” Quest. It leads through the streets of Stęszew and presents the townscape of the 19th century. The leaflet may be updated, so check the current version before your walk. While the educational, nature and cultural trail starts in the town center, the Quest focuses specifically on the historic townscape. These different focuses can help you plan according to your interests, rather than treating both as the same kind of route.

For a landscape perspective, the Samica Stęszewska is a distinctive landmark: the river flows through Stęszew and empties into Lake Witobelskie near Witobel. Stęszew also lies on an old trade route from Lower Silesia. The river and the trade route offer two different geographical points of reference: one describes the course of the water through the town to the lake, while the other reflects the town’s historic connection to a trade route.

Choose the Focus of Your Stay

If you are especially interested in architecture and historical objects, the museum, church and Marian Sanctuary offer different points of interest: an 18th-century building with a collection, several construction phases at the Church of the Holy Trinity, and a sanctuary dating from 1905 with a 16th-century sculpture. If you prefer to follow a described route, consider the educational, nature and cultural trail or the Quest. The Quest focuses specifically on the 19th-century townscape; the castle ruins extend the historical timeline to an earlier era.

When choosing a hotel, you can use these interests as a starting point: would you like architectural and collection history to shape your stay, or would you also like to include the trail and river in your plans? The sights and routes offer different emphases; the choice of focus is yours.
