Kamionna’s Market Square retains the layout it had when Kamionna was a town. South of the settlement lies the Kamionka Valley, which is part of the Dolina Kamionki Landscape Protection Park. This means that two distinct focal points sit side by side in Kamionna: its former town layout and a protected valley landscape. The town’s history is concentrated mainly around the square, the church and a milestone; to the south, forests, meadows and spring areas shape the landscape.
Market Square, Church and Milestone
A former town hall stands in the middle of the Market Square. Surrounding it are several half-timbered houses dating from the 19th century and a statue of Saint Lawrence. These elements create different points of emphasis: the town hall recalls the site’s former civic function, the houses represent a specific period of construction, and the statue of Saint Lawrence adds a religious motif to the square. Together, they preserve the layout of the Market Square from the time when Kamionna was a town.
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is in the southwest of Kamionna, west of the Market Square on a high riverbank above the Kamionna River. A bell-shaped milestone stands right next to the church. It was erected between 1826 and 1835 on the main road from Poznań to Berlin. The stone initially stood by the fire station and was later moved to the church. Its location beside the church and its former position by the fire station give the town’s history a concrete sequence of events; the dates also point to the historic road between Poznań and Berlin.
The Kamionka Valley and Its Protected Area
The deeply incised Kamionka Valley, south of Kamionna, covers 1,970 hectares. Its landscape features include wooded ravines with beech forest, oak-hornbeam forests and alder carrs, as well as meadows and spring areas. The description of the valley therefore includes both wooded sections and open areas with springs. The valley is part of the Dolina Kamionki Landscape Protection Park, which covers 2,046.86 hectares. The park protects the landscape of the Kamionka Valley, natural valley ecosystems, and the habitats of rare and protected plants, animals and fungi. The two area figures refer to different places: 1,970 hectares for the valley and 2,046.86 hectares for the park. In 1986, the valley was protected as one of two parts of the Pszczew Landscape Protection Park; since 2019, the park has existed under its current name and within its current boundaries.
A Walk in the Surrounding Area
A walk in the surrounding area offers, among other things, views of the Kozie Góry, the highest elevations near Kamionna, and Lake Kuchenne. Prusim is 3.6 km away. Alongside named landscape features, this provides a specific destination and distance to help you find your way.
The distinction between the two options is clear: the Market Square recalls Kamionna’s former town layout, while a walk in the surrounding area offers geographical reference points such as the Kozie Góry, Lake Kuchenne and Prusim. You can therefore make local history and landscape distinct themes of your trip.
