Brdów: Cycling Routes and Pauline Tradition

Brdów can be viewed from two different perspectives for a trip: as a place on cycling routes with varying route lengths, and as the site of a Pauline monastery with Marian devotion. This helps you choose what to focus on: those interested in longer cycling routes can compare the starting point, destination and section within the municipality; those who want to focus on cultural heritage can find specific points of interest in the monastery, the church and religious tradition. Both themes give a trip to Brdów a clear direction without prescribing a fixed daily itinerary.

Distinguishing Cycling Routes by Their Course

The Green Cycling Route, about 85 kilometres long, begins and ends in Koło and passes through Brdów, among other places. 48 kilometres of this route lie within the municipality. The two figures describe different scales: 85 kilometres refers to the entire Green Cycling Route, while 48 kilometres refers to its section within the municipal boundaries. The municipal figure is therefore not another route; it shows Brdów’s share of the longer route.

A second cycling route, about 40 kilometres long, runs from Brdów via Wrząca Wielka, Koło and Powiercie to Grzegorzew. It was marked and described by middle school students from Sokołów and Powiercie. The routes differ not only in their approximate lengths: the Green Cycling Route starts and ends in Koło and passes through Brdów, while the second route runs from Brdów to Grzegorzew. When comparing the figures, it is therefore helpful not to equate the section within the municipality with the length of a complete route. The sequence of named places also makes the course of the second route easy to follow.

Pauline Monastery and Religious Tradition

The Pauline monastery in Brdów is considered one of the first Pauline monasteries in Poland. The church in Brdów is dedicated to Saint Adalbert (Wojciech). The monastery’s foundation charter provides a dated reference point: it dates from 1436 and was issued by King Władysław III of Varna. One tradition names Władysław Jagiełło as the monastery’s actual founder. These are different historical points of reference: the charter specifies a year and its issuer, while tradition attributes the role of founder to Jagiełło.

The miraculous image Matka Boża Zwycięska Brdowska draws pilgrims to the Marian shrine in Brdów. It is painted on five linden-wood boards. The pilgrims’ devotion and the image’s support offer two specific ways to engage with this religious heritage: the role of the miraculous image in the shrine and its described material form. Together with the church’s dedication and the monastery’s history, they create a cultural focus that differs from the geographical details of the cycling routes.

Different questions come to the fore when choosing what to focus on during your trip. For the cycling routes, the course, endpoints and distinction between the full route and the section within the municipality are helpful. For the Pauline monastery, the dated charter, the founder’s role as described in tradition, the church’s dedication and the miraculous image provide guidance. You can explore Brdów based on whether you are more interested in the routes or the town’s religious history.
