In Kępno, the town’s history and routes through the area offer distinct ways to explore. The museum is located on the market square in a building that formerly served an administrative function; other buildings reflect a variety of periods and architectural styles. Two walking trails follow different routes, while the town park has walking paths and an outdoor fitness area. As you plan, you can give different weight to culture, outdoor activities and time in the park.

Market Square and Museum

The Muzeum Ziemi Kępińskiej im. T. P. Potworowskiego is located in the town centre on the market square. It is housed in a building constructed in 1846, which served as the town hall until 1975. The museum’s location thus connects a specific address with part of the town’s history: the building served an administrative function for more than a century before becoming the museum’s home.

The museum presents the permanent exhibition “Z historii Kępna”, as well as “Dziedzictwo Żydowskie w Kępnie” and “Kolory Potworowskiego”. The exhibitions focus on different subjects and offer a reason to set aside more than a passing glance at the building for your museum visit. If you want to include the museum specifically in your stay, check the latest visitor information in advance.

The market square itself also shapes the town’s historic layout: it is square-shaped and covers an area of one hectare. At its centre stands the town hall, built in 1835—a two-storey brick building in the Classical style with a central clock tower. Together with the museum on the market square, the town hall provides a second specific point of reference for the architectural history of the town centre.

Architecture from different periods

The synagogue in Kępno was built in 1814–1815 to replace an earlier wooden synagogue. Its monumental Tuscan portico references the façade of the opera house in Potsdam. This building therefore brings together a precisely dated structure and a specific architectural reference. For architecture enthusiasts, it offers not only a story about its construction but also a detail that looks beyond local architectural styles.

The present-day Roman Catholic Church of St Martin was built in 1911 in the Neo-Baroque style. Its furnishings include a main altar from the 18th century and Baroque sculptures from earlier altars. The building date and its furnishings thus point to different periods. The historic post office building offers another point of comparison: it was built in 1888–1889 in the Neo-Renaissance style.

The water tower makes a different impression. At 42.5 metres high, it is a distinctive building; its design combines Neo-Gothic forms with restrained Romanesque influences and a roof with Baroque-inspired details. The town hall, synagogue, church, post office building and water tower thus represent a range of architectural forms rather than a single, uniform townscape.

Walking trails with different routes

The yellow Wielkopolska walking trail WK, OP, ŁD-193y passes through Kępno. The named waypoints include the Kępno Viaduct by the railway station and a crossing of the Samica River. The blue Wielkopolska trail WK-3672N runs through Kępno from the main railway station via Kopiec to the Przemysłowa housing estate. Its described sequence highlights different stops: the station, Kopiec and the housing estate mark its route.

Kopiec lies northwest of Kępno in the nearby area and preserves remains of a medieval fortification. It existed between the first half of the 13th century and the second half of the 15th century. The blue trail thus connects a named route with a place whose significance lies in the surviving remains of the fortification. The trail descriptions give different route sections; before setting out, it is worth checking the current signage and conditions.

Town park and geographical setting

A municipal post dated 14 December 2023 mentions paved paths and walking trails in the town park, as well as park lighting. It also mentions an outdoor fitness area with equipment specially adapted for older people. If these amenities are important to your plans, check their current status before your visit.

Kępno lies on the Niesób River, also known locally as the Samica, on the Wysoczyzna Wieruszowska upland. This geographical setting complements the specific routes and town landmarks with a broader landscape context. During your stay, you can choose between architectural history, the museum, walking trails and the amenities described in the town park.
