Mount Apo rises to 3,142.79 meters above sea level. In Davao Del Sur, nature experiences around the mountain go hand in hand with hiking, bird habitats and cultural sites.
Mount Apo and diverse habitats
Mount Apo is a protected area officially designated as a Natural Park. It is recognized for its rich biodiversity, diverse ecosystems and cultural significance. Kapatagan is located at the foot of Mount Apo in Digos City, Davao del Sur, providing a specific geographic connection to the mountain.
Bird habitats also vary with the landscape: Mount Apo Natural Park provides a home for resident and migratory bird species, including endemic species of the Philippines. The coastal and mangrove areas of Santa Cruz, particularly Barangay Tagabuli and nearby shoreline habitats, serve as feeding, resting and breeding grounds for waterbirds and waders.
Hiking and outdoor activities
Mt. Dinor offers a hike through lush, species-rich tropical rainforest. Mt. Loay offers a different experience: its climb is considered suitable for beginners and ends with a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape. This makes the rainforest along the way and the panoramic view at the end two distinct hiking experiences. Trail conditions can change, so check their current status before setting out.
The Sibulan Trail is one of the routes to Mount Apo. Signage along the trail addresses biodiversity conservation and cultural sensitivity toward the Indigenous Peoples community. A community report from 2018 describes this signage; check on site whether it is still there. The Sibulan River in Santa Cruz offers another activity: river tubing, where visitors float downstream through rapids. River conditions and operating procedures can change, so ask about current conditions in advance.
Bagobo culture and local traditions
At the Bagobo Cultural Village in Barangay Tibolo in Santa Cruz, visitors can learn about the Bagobo Tagabawa community. The cultural significance of Mount Apo also includes Apo Sandawa: the Manobo and Kalagan peoples who live in the mountain’s foothills revere it as an ancestral spirit.
In Bansalan, visitors can watch master weavers at work at the Salinta Monon Weaving Center and learn about the history of Bagobo weaving. Observation, handicrafts and the opportunity to buy make this a different kind of experience from hiking or visiting nature areas.
The annual Bansaulog Festival in Bansalan adds a festive occasion to these cultural themes. At the 2024 Farmers’ Day celebration, the program began on September 13 with a carabao parade. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year; the 2024 date is not a current event date.
Tomari Waterfall in Santa Cruz
Tomari Waterfall is located in Barangay Sibulan in Santa Cruz. A 2021 report describes a view of a waterfall and rock formation; at the time, the new tourism site was still to be developed and opened. Before visiting, check the current access situation rather than assuming that the older description reflects present-day visitor access.
