At the southernmost end of mainland Cebu lies Santander, where the Tañon Strait meets the Bohol Sea. The town combines a clearly defined coastal location with a practical planning question: Should Santander be your destination, or also your starting point for onward ferry travel? Local tuba offers another way to experience the town, beyond simply planning your trip.

Santander’s Location and Name

Santander lies about 135 kilometers south of Cebu City. Oslob is north of the town, and the Tañon Strait lies to the west. Together with its location at the southernmost tip of mainland Cebu, these directions provide a clear frame of reference for the town. Santander offers sea views where the Tañon Strait meets the Bohol Sea.

The name also points to an earlier period: Santander was formerly known as Tañon. The Spanish renamed the town Santander after a coastal city in northern Spain. The town’s history therefore has two names side by side: Tañon as its former name and Santander as the name the Spanish chose for it.

Getting There and Traveling On

A direct bus from the Cebu South Bus Terminal to Santander travels along the east coast and reaches either the Port of Liloan or the town center. If traveling by private vehicle, the route follows N. Bacalso Avenue south along the east coast to the southernmost tip of mainland Cebu. These destinations can help you choose how to arrive: by bus, you can reach the Port of Liloan or the town center; by car, you can travel to the southern tip. Before departure, check current bus availability and schedules, as well as road conditions.

Santander is also a departure point for ferries to Sibulan in Negros Oriental and nearby islands. If a crossing is part of your plans, check the current schedule in advance. This lets you plan the journey along the east coast and the ferry crossing as separate steps.

Tuba from the Highlands

One local product that draws attention from the coast to the highlands is tuba. In Santander’s highlands, this traditional drink is made by fermenting sweet sap from coconut blossoms. Freshly consumed, tuba is a sweet morning drink; when aged, it becomes a strong, sour vinegar used in local cooking. The two uses are quite distinct: tuba is served fresh as a morning drink or aged into vinegar for cooking. This gives Santander’s culinary scene a tangible connection to a local product.

April and a Named Destination

April is recommended as the best time to visit to experience the Tostado Festival and enjoy clear coastal views. If the festival is a deciding factor in your travel dates, check the current event dates before booking. One of Santander’s main attractions is the Sanayon Watch Deck/Rest Area & Marine Sanctuary. If you want to include this place in your stay, check its accessibility in advance.
