The Palawod Festival and local seafood specialties connect Bantayan with marine resources and fishing culture. Holy Week celebrations have a different, religious focus. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing these traditions from the landscape and the different ways of getting there: they appeal to different interests and raise their own practical questions.

Getting to Bantayan

The route described for public transport starts at the Cebu North Bus Terminal. From there, take a bus to Hagnaya Port in San Remigio, then take the ferry to Bantayan Island. From the port in Santa Fe, continue to the municipality of Bantayan by tricycle or local transport. You can allow around four to five hours for the entire journey. Check the schedules before departure.

By private vehicle, the route goes from Hagnaya by RoRo ferry to the port of Santa Fe, then continues from there to the town center of Bantayan. The total travel time for this option is also around four to five hours. When choosing between the options, the main consideration is whether to continue from Santa Fe by tricycle or local transport, or take your private vehicle on the ferry and travel all the way to the town center.

Coast and Mangroves

The municipality of Bantayan is known for its white sand beaches, clear water and relaxed island atmosphere. The Omagieca Obo-ob Mangrove Garden is another main attraction. This means the coastal character and the mangrove landscape offer distinct connections with nature. If you are considering Bantayan primarily for its scenery, you can keep these two attractions in mind separately when planning your trip, rather than associating the municipality only with beach stays.

Festivals, Customs and Building History

The Palawod Festival is celebrated annually. Through performances and community festivities, it honors the municipality’s rich marine resources and fishing culture. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance. This lets you coordinate your stay with the festival without assuming a specific date.

Holy Week celebrations represent long-standing fasting traditions and religious customs. This distinguishes them from the Palawod Festival, which explicitly focuses on marine resources and fishing. The construction history of the present-day building of Ang Simbahan ng Bantayan is also precisely dated: construction began in 1839, and the building was completed in 1863.

Bantayan Seafood Specialties

Fish Tapa and Tocino are considered local specialties of Bantayan; both are savory, sun-dried fish fillets. Danggit is a crispy, salted and dried rabbitfish. Labtingaw is a tender, semi-dried fish snack. Dayok, in turn, is a rich, fermented sauce made from fish organs. These specialties therefore include more than one method of preparation: alongside dried fillets and fish snacks, the municipality’s culinary profile also features a sauce.
