The San Guillermo Parish Church in Bacolor is partly buried by lahar—and is still used as a place of worship. Bacoloreños in particular come here to pray. The church stands as a testament to their deep faith, unbroken spirit and resilience in times of disaster. It was a well-known destination even before the lahar disasters; today, its preserved and well-maintained areas attract both local and international visitors. Visible traces of the disasters and continued religious use shape this special place in Pampanga.

Churches, Faith and Architectural History

The Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine in Cabetican, Bacolor, also has significance beyond the local area: it was declared a shrine for the entire Archdiocese. The faithful from Cabetican and across Pampanga worked together to build the shrine dedicated to the Mother of God. Pilgrims come especially on the first Saturdays of the month. The Church of Guagua in Guagua is also a place of worship and bears a Level II historical marker.

In Angeles, the architecture tells further stories. Completed in 1896, the Holy Rosary Parish Church features Romanesque-inspired architecture and two distinctive bell towers. Museo ning Angeles is housed in the former town hall building, constructed in 1922. Its exhibits explore the city's history, Kapampangan traditions and culinary heritage.

The Juan D. Nepomuceno Center for Kapampangan Studies is dedicated to preserving and promoting Kapampangan cultural heritage. The center includes a research center, a library with archives, a museum and gallery, and a theater. Estacion de Angeles is also a historic landmark that recalls the history of the railway: its tracks extend across four sections through the barangays of Agapito Del Rosario, Claro M. Recto, Lourdes Sur East and Lourdes Sur.

Processions, Craftsmanship and Cuisine

In Bacolor, the Good Friday Procession is a solemn traditional Filipino prusisyon. Rosary prayers and solemn songs define its character. The Makatapak Festival offers a different expression: during the town festival in November, competing groups dance barefoot along the procession route, the “paglimbunan.” The contrast between a religious procession and a street dance shows two different forms of living tradition.

In Betis, Guagua, furniture-making and wood carving are considered important crafts—not only for Pampanga, but also for Luzon. The Pampanga Culinary Tour brings culinary discoveries together in a curated slow-food journey celebrating tradition, craftsmanship and local flavors. It begins with traditional dishes by Atching Lillian Borromeo at Kusinang Matua in Mexico. The tour then travels by calesa to Matuang Bale Café and the public market in the City of San Fernando. The itinerary also includes a specially prepared lunch at Balé Pampanga in Sta. Rita, a sorbet stop at Nepo Mart in Angeles, and a cooking demonstration at The Culinarium to finish.

Another culinary trail leads to Camalig: Armando’s Pizza uses a classic homemade recipe that has been refined over decades since the restaurant was founded in 1973. The menu also features its own version of sisig. Since menus can change, check the current menu before visiting.

Mount Arayat and the Birds of Candaba

The conservation history of Mount Arayat dates back to 1933, when Mount Arayat National Park was established. It was among the earliest protected areas in the Philippines. The former protected area was officially designated the Mount Arayat Protected Landscape on April 8, 2022, through Republic Act No. 11684. The dormant stratovolcano covers around 3,726.5 hectares; the protected area extends across barangays in Magalang and Arayat. A 2023 report mentions Stations of the Cross, a campsite, waterfalls and a spring-water pool there.

Tourists and birdwatchers visit the observation site in Barangay Paligui, Candaba, during the dry season from November to April. It is flooded during high water, and conditions can vary by season. Candaba Swamp is an important bird area within the East Asian–Australasian Flyway and also an important biodiversity area. In Pampanga, religious traditions and craftsmanship stand alongside natural areas whose distinctive qualities are also shaped by seasonal conditions.
