A precisely dated landmark in Cavite City is the site of the former Teatro Caviteño. The theater served as the headquarters of General Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy; on the afternoon of May 28, 1898, he raised the Philippine flag there. This took place in connection with the victory of the Philippine revolutionaries over the Spanish at Alapan. The historical marker at this site is classified as a Level II historical marker.
Fort, Memorials, and City History
Fort San Felipe offers another point of reference in time: between 1609 and 1616, it was the first fort built at Cavite Harbor. The recorded history also includes the churches of San Francisco, Santo Domingo, Kapisánan ni Hesus, and San Nicolas, which were demolished for defensive reasons. Together, these accounts show two different aspects of the city’s history: the construction of a fortification and the consequences that defensive measures had for other buildings.
Attractions in Cavite City include the 1872 Cavite Mutiny Memorial. The shrine of Don Ladislao Diwa is another city attraction. Diwa is described as one of the founding fathers of the Katipunan. The XIII Martyr’s Centennial Plaza honors 13 Filipinos killed by Spanish colonists. These three named sites thus represent different historical points of reference: the memorial, the shrine and its connection to Diwa, and the plaza’s commemorative purpose.
An 18th-century scientific episode
On February 27, 1787, the French ships La Boussole and L’Astrolabe anchored off Cavite. They had been sent on a scientific mission. A temporary observatory was set up in the garden of the residence of the commandant of Cavite. There, the astronomer Joseph Le Paute D’Agelet determined Cavite’s latitude using a quadrant with a three-foot radius. He calculated its longitude using lunar distances and chronometer rates. This episode connects a specific location with the use of scientific instruments and methods.
More historical and natural attractions in Cavite
The wider destination of Cavite offers additional historical connections. Andres and Procopio Bonifacio were court-martialed at the Bonifacio Trial House in May 1897. The independence of the Philippines from Spain was declared at the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine, also called Museo ni Emilio Aguinaldo, on June 12, 1898. The shrine was once Emilio Aguinaldo’s ancestral home. These places complement the historical themes rooted in Cavite City with distinct historical events and sites elsewhere in the wider destination of Cavite.
The landscape and culture also broaden the regional perspective. Mt. Pico de Loro spans the provinces of Cavite and Batangas and is considered a destination for beginners looking for a challenging hike and a rewarding view. The CvSU Historical Museum in Indang, Cavite, is a museum and art gallery. Check current operating details before visiting. When choosing a destination, you can weigh two different priorities: the historical points of interest in Cavite City and other historical, museum, or landscape attractions in the destination of Cavite.
