Nauta combines the Laguna Sapi Sapi tourist complex with historical landmarks in town. For other nature experiences, it helps to check the specific location: Puerto Prado is 20 minutes by boat from Nauta, while Quebrada Zaragoza is in Nauta District. This means the destinations differ in both their focus and geographic location.
Laguna Sapi Sapi and Historical Landmarks
The Laguna Sapi Sapi tourist complex in Nauta includes malocas, pedestrian bridges, handicraft stalls, a restaurant, pedal boats, a boulevard and a multipurpose maloca. The complex brings together architectural features, handicrafts, dining and recreational activities at one destination. The lagoon was inaugurated as a tourist centre in 2022.
The Church of San Felipe y Santiago stands directly opposite Nauta’s Plaza de Armas. The building now known as Teatro Ucamara formerly housed Nauta’s parish. These offer two distinct historical points of interest: the church’s precise location on the main square, and the former religious use of the Teatro Ucamara building.
Nature Experiences Around Nauta
The Comunidad Nativa de Puerto Prado offers ecological trails for sustainable tourism. Along them, visitors can observe animals such as lion tamarins, blue jeans frogs, fruit bats and Isula ants in their natural habitat. The trails combine outdoor activity with nature watching. Trail conditions and guiding arrangements may change, so check locally in advance for current conditions and available guides.
The private conservation area ParaĂso Natural Iwirati is also part of the area around Nauta. It covers 100 of Puerto Prado’s 522 hectares. In 2014, Peru’s Ministry of the Environment recognized ParaĂso Natural Iwirati as the first community-run private conservation area in the Peruvian Amazon.
Another nature experience is offered by the El Bosque de los Niños “Iwiratikuara Ikrantsenkana” programme: visitors can plant native trees together with children from the Comunidad Nativa de Puerto Prado. So, alongside observing wildlife, the programme also includes a hands-on activity. Confirm the current participation requirements locally in advance.
Waterway in Nauta District
Quebrada Zaragoza is a narrow, meandering waterway in Nauta District. Visitors can swim, go for walks and camp there. Water and access conditions may vary seasonally; check them before your visit, especially if you plan to swim or camp. “Meandering” describes a winding rather than straight course.
The nature activities differ in focus: in Puerto Prado, the trails, wildlife watching and tree-planting activity are connected; at Quebrada Zaragoza, swimming, walks and camping are possible. This lets you weigh up wildlife watching, hands-on participation and activities on the water.
