The Nueva Esperanza route in the Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve extends through Llanchama and Nueva Esperanza. In Llanchama, Varillal forests on white sand shape the area’s natural character; they are part of the Napo ecoregion. Birdwatching, hiking and observing flora and fauna are among the activities available along the route. This gives Llanchama a clear focus for travellers who want to spend their time experiencing the landscape and observing nature.

White sand, Varillal forest and endemic birds

The combination of white sand and Varillal forest gives the landscape a distinctive character. Its features also include quebradas, meaning smaller watercourses or streams. Medicinal plants are another attraction. Nature observation here is therefore not focused on animals alone: plants and watercourses broaden the view of the forests, which belong to the Napo ecoregion.

The connection with birds is especially clear in three endemic species of the Varillal forests: the Iquitos Gnatcatcher (Polioptila clementsi), the Allpahuayo Antbird (Percnostola arenarum) and the Mishana Tyrannulet (Zimmerius villarejoi). These species give birdwatching a clear focus. The also-available observation of flora and fauna is broader in scope, taking in plant and animal life together.

Activities for different nature interests

The route offers opportunities for hiking and observing birds, flora and fauna. These activities offer different areas of focus: birdwatching draws attention to the endemic species, while nature observation more generally brings together plants and animals. Medicinal plants offer their own botanical focus. Those most interested in experiencing the landscape will find further points of interest for their visit in the Varillal forests on white sand and the smaller watercourses. This allows you to tailor your focus among the natural features to your own interests, without following a set order of activities.

Stays and overnight accommodation

A stay of one to three days is recommended for a visit to the route. This timeframe helps you plan your stay and choose how to balance nature observation and hiking according to your interests. Lodges are offered along the route as a visitor service. Before travelling, check whether a lodge is available and include this information in your overnight accommodation plans.

Llanchama can be reached by land via the passable Zungarococha–Puerto Almendra–Nina Rumi–Llanchama road. Travel by boat along the Río Nanay is also possible. Your travel plans will differ depending on whether you choose the land or river route. Before deciding how to travel, check the current road conditions or the availability of boats locally.

Other landscape features in Llanchama

Llanchama is also home to the white-sand beaches of Mocahua, Esperanza and Tinaja. A regional report from 2011 describes these beaches as places where visitors could camp. They add further named places at the destination to the route’s landscape offerings.
