Archaeological sites define the Province of Lambayeque; in TĂșcume, church architecture and regional cuisine are additional areas of interest. In the wider Lambayeque destination, youâll also find museums, nature trails, coastal culture and crafts as distinct themes in their own right.
Archaeological sites in TĂșcume and Chotuna-Chornancap
The TĂșcume Archaeological Complex is also known as the Pyramids of TĂșcume, Cerro La Raya and Cerro Purgatorio. When you use these names while planning your trip, they all refer to the same complex. The area figures for Chotuna and Chornancap indicate a different scale: the Chotuna complex covers approximately 95 hectares, while the Chornancap area covers approximately 17 hectares. These figures refer to different archaeological areas and should be attributed accordingly.
At the Chotuna-Chornancap Archaeological Complex, visitors can see the excavated areas of Sala de los DepĂłsitos and Templo de los Frisos. Check current access arrangements before your visit. This lets you include the named areas in your plans without assuming that conditions on site have remained unchanged.
Church architecture and regional cuisine
Iglesia San Pedro de TĂșcume features Baroque, Churrigueresque and Neoclassical elements. These three styles give the church its own architectural significance alongside the archaeological sites. If you want to include both historical sites and regional culture in your trip, you can plan these themes separately rather than treating them as one and the same visit.
Tastings also bring local cuisine together with a visit to the huacas: the community of TĂșcume offers regional dishes to sample as part of tours of the huacas. As these community offerings can change, check in advance what is currently available.
More to explore in the wider Lambayeque destination
The museums in the wider Lambayeque destination each have a different focus. Museo de Sitio Chotuna-Chornancap welcomes visitors Tuesday to Sunday, including public holidays, from 9:00 to 16:45; opening hours may change. Its exhibition reconstructs Naylampâs arrival, landing, death and burial. If you plan to visit the museum, check the hours shortly beforehand.
A 2021 description of Museo TĂșcume mentions three independent exhibition rooms. Its interactive, highly visual museography explores the relationship between culture and nature and the history of TĂșcume from pre-Hispanic times to the present day. Museo Nacional de SicĂĄn offers a different perspective: it displays artefacts found during excavations at BatĂĄn Grande and presents them as they were used or made. The museum content described here therefore differs considerably: one focuses on a narrated history, another on the relationship between culture and nature, and the SicĂĄn museum on the finds and their use.
The nature destinations also differ in the activities and travel information provided. The conventional route in Santuario HistĂłrico Bosque de PĂłmac includes hikes and opportunities to observe flora and fauna. The reserve can be reached overland from Chiclayo in about 45 minutes; travel time may vary depending on road conditions. The overland journey from Chiclayo to Laquipampa takes about two and a half hours. From there, walking trails lead to Lajas in 30 minutes, El Reloj in one hour and Quebrada Shambo in two hours. Times may vary depending on road and trail conditions. This distinction matters for planning: the stated 45 minutes is the journey to Bosque de PĂłmac, while for Laquipampa, specific walking times to several destinations are also provided.
At Parque Artesanal de MonsefĂș, visitors can buy and try Manjar, also known as Picarones or Buñuelos. A directory dated March 7, 2025 lists 33 registered craft stalls there. On the coast, Muelle de Pimentel is an iconic pier made of iron and wood, and a representative symbol of the regionâs maritime activity. These places offer different travel experiences from the archaeological sites: crafts and regional products in MonsefĂș, and maritime history at the pier.
