Around the Plaza Principal, Yanque’s history unfolds across several layers: the Church of the Immaculate Conception stands at the town’s social and cultural heart, while the Museo Yanque–UCSM offers a glimpse into the local area and the Colca Valley. If you’re looking for a hotel in Yanque, the town’s history, museum collections and archaeological heritage can help guide your choice.
Plaza, Church and Cultural Life
On the south side of the Plaza Principal stands the Church of the Immaculate Conception, a 1560 building in the mestizo Baroque style. The Plaza de Yanque is the center of social and cultural life. Together, the church and plaza bring architectural history and the cultural significance of the town’s public center into focus.
The Plaza Principal is also a venue for cultural performances such as the Wititi dance, accompanied by demonstrations of local crafts and textiles. The fountain depicts a woman from Yanque in traditional clothing pouring Chicha Yanqueña. Here, local culture takes several forms: dance, craft and textile demonstrations, and a public art motif.
Colonial Era and Museum Collections
Yanque was built during the colonial era. During part of the republican period, it was one of the capitals of the Province of Collaguas. These two historical contexts refer to different periods in the town’s history and complement the story of the 1560 church.
The Museo Yanque–UCSM is located in Yanque, in a house built in 1927, and offers visitors insight into the local area and the Colca Valley. The first gallery displays archaeological evidence from hunter-gatherers and from the pre-Hispanic Collagua, Kunti/Cabana and Inca periods through to the colonial era. The second gallery focuses on pre-Hispanic textiles. If you’re interested in a particular period, you can compare the broad timeline in the first gallery with the focused look at textiles in the second. Check current opening hours before planning your visit.
Town Layout and Culinary Identity
Yanque has preserved the Andean division into Hanan and Urin to this day. Yanque Hanansaya and Yanque Urinsaya together form a single urban center. This division therefore describes a preserved internal structure of the town, not two separate centers.
Chicha Yanqueña is also part of the town’s local identity: the drink has deep-rooted traditions and is considered a symbol of Yanque, as well as a regional tourist attraction. Local dishes include Convido, P'esqe and Picante de Olluco. This cultural perspective extends beyond buildings and collections to drinks and dishes associated with the town.
Uyo Uyo and the Surrounding Area
Uyo Uyo is the ancient village of Yanque; the archaeological site lies in the Yanque Urinsaya community. Uyo Uyo is considered one of the finest examples of Inca architecture in the Colca Valley. Compared with the 1560 church, the archaeological site brings a different architectural and historical period into view.
The Chacapi hot springs are 1.4 km from the Plaza in Yanque, at an elevation of 3,340 m in the Colca Valley, on the Colca River and near the colonial Cervantes Bridge. This location gives Chacapi a distinct geographical setting: the river, elevation and proximity to the bridge provide a different focus from the town’s history around the Plaza.
