Huaylia is part of the cultural life of Antabamba Province; Killcata, Huacullo, and Totora Oropesa are associated with Oropesa District. This offers travelers planning a trip a choice of different focuses: community traditions, textile crafts, or landscapes.

Huaylia: Festival Tradition and Dance in Antabamba

The Huaylia of Antabamba Province was declared National Cultural Heritage of Peru in 2004. It is celebrated in the province each year in December and January as a traditional festival honoring the birth of Jesus. Iberian-Spanish religious beliefs and customs have shaped the celebration. An account published in 2022 gives December 23–28 as the period when celebrations take place simultaneously in all districts of the province; it lists streets and squares as venues. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the specific event dates in advance.

The Huaylia of Oropesa has a distinctive appearance: its multicolored garments include ribbons and other decorations that hang from the hats. The dancers perform more than twelve different dance steps. Together, the festival period, religious significance, and dance form offer a glimpse into different aspects of Huaylia without reducing it to a single stage scene.

Huacullo: Ceremony and Textile Crafts

In Huacullo, the Llama Tinka is held each year in honor of alpacas and llamas. During the ceremony, thanks are given to the Earth for protecting the animals from illness and accidents. The tradition thus connects the veneration of the animals with gratitude for their well-being.

Huacullo's crafts include items made from alpaca yarn: llikllas, ponchos, blankets, chumpis, chuspas, and ropes. Llamas or birds appear in the patterns; the products come in various colors and are usually black. A comparison with the Llama Tinka reveals two cultural connections to the animals: they are central to the ceremony and are also associated with the alpaca material used. These products are part of Huacullo's local craft tradition.

High-Andean Landscapes in Oropesa District

The Killcata Hot Springs are located in the community of the same name in Oropesa District, Antabamba Province, at an elevation of about 4,014 meters and south of Totora Oropesa. The Killcata River flows through a high-Andean landscape there. The area includes the natural formation locally known as “Infiernillo”: a pool of about 105 square meters that resembles a volcanic crater and from which very hot water emerges. The river, elevation, and formation are defining features of this landscape.

A ten-kilometer hiking trail leads from Totora Oropesa to Catarata Fusiray; the walking time is given as 45 minutes. This distance refers to the route between Totora Oropesa and the waterfall. Another striking feature of the landscape is snow-capped Mallmanya, which reaches 5,210 meters. It rises southeast of the city of Mamara in Grau Province and the town of Totora Oropesa in Antabamba Province. For the surrounding communities, Mallmanya is a revered Apu; they ask for its protection, especially for livestock raising and agriculture.

The names Pampahuasi 1 and Pampahuasi 2 also appear in connection with natural attractions: the two lagoons are associated with the Huacullo center. These place references clearly distinguish between Huaylia at the provincial level and the places in Oropesa District.
