Huarmey offers two perspectives on a stay: the city on the Río Huarmey, with its cultural and culinary identity, and the nearby coastal destinations. Rather than viewing the area as a single beach destination, you can distinguish between urban traditions, a distinctive local dish and different seaside landscapes. This lets you shape your visit around the things that interest you most.

City Life, Tradition and Cuisine

Huarmey lies on the banks of the Río Huarmey and at kilometer 293 of the Panamericana Norte. The city is home to fishers and farmers. This brief description adds a hint of local character to the geographic orientation.

The Virgen del Rosario is considered Huarmey’s patron saint and lifetime-appointed mayor. Her revered statue was carried through the city streets in a procession. The procession brings local devotion into the urban setting and gives the religious tradition a tangible connection to Huarmey.

Huarmey is also known as “La ciudad de la cordialidad” (“The City of Cordiality”). The nickname refers to residents’ hospitable attitude toward visitors and adds a local self-description to the picture of the city.

The cuisine also offers a tangible local connection: In the district of Huarmey, Seviche Huarmeyano is prepared without fish. Instead, it contains chanque, lenguitas and blanco, as well as yuyo. The first Ruta del “Seviche Huarmeyano” took place in 2024. During the event, participants visited various restaurants and wariques in the city, which competed for the best ceviche. The dish and the route highlight different aspects: the ingredients of a local specialty and a culinary competition among city establishments.

Beaches with Distinctive Character

Playa Tuquillo is part of a well-known beach circuit in Huarmey. This includes Salinas, Antivito, Maracaná, La Pocita and Médano, among others. Tuquillo is a bay formed between hills and the coast, in the area around Huarmey. To the north lies La Pocita, a calm pool between rocks. The bay and the rock-enclosed pool give this stretch of coast distinct landscape features.

Another way to explore the area is to visit Playa Boquerón de Manache. From Plaza Independencia in Huarmey, an approximately two-kilometer walk along an unpaved track leads to the beach. Along the way, you can see cultivated fields and agricultural activities. The route thus connects a specific starting point in the city with a coastal destination and offers glimpses of farming along the way. Its length is approximate; conditions on the unpaved track may vary. Check local route conditions before your visit.

At Playa Boquerón de Manache, the sea has formed a bay. Isla Manache is visible on the horizon, where cormorants and patillos rest. Sport fishing is possible at this beach. Swimming is not recommended because the open sea and strong surf make the shoreline dangerous. Walking and landscape photography are alternatives. The options are therefore clearly distinct: admire the scenery, explore on foot or go sport fishing instead of swimming.

Playa Antivito is considered suitable for surfing, bodyboarding and sport fishing. National bodyboarding championships have also been held there. Playa Salinas adds an archaeological dimension to Huarmey Province’s beach corridor: Maize seeds found in colcas near the beach are considered the oldest dated finds of their kind on the Peruvian coast. The area around the city thus offers everything from coastal landscapes and activities to archaeological finds.
