Caraz combines urban heritage and religious traditions with scenic destinations in the surrounding area. For planning purposes, there is a clear distinction: festivals and markets take place on specific days of the week or during set periods; for trips to destinations outside town, consider routes and transport options separately.

Cultural Heritage and Religious Traditions

The Plaza de Armas de Caraz was designated an Ambiente Urbano Monumental on June 14, 2001, by Resolución Directoral Nacional No. 525-INC-2001. It is therefore part of the nation’s immovable colonial heritage and lies within the Monumental Zone of the city of Caraz, whose boundaries were established on August 23, 2001, by Resolución Directoral Nacional No. 857-INC-2001. In the area around Caraz, the archaeological site of Tumshukaiko is considered a significant cultural heritage site and an emblematic monument of the Áncash region because of its monumental scale, historical value and tourism potential.

Religious traditions include the novenas in honor of the Santísima Virgen del Rosario de Chiquinquirá de Caraz, which take place from January 10 to 18. Check the local calendar for current information if you want to plan your trip around this period. During the Fiesta de Corpus Christi, a procession led by San Ildefonso, the patron saint of Caraz, passes over carpets of flowers and along the city’s main streets. Beforehand, the sacred images enter the Templo de Piedra de Caraz, accompanied by a Mass.

The Museo Municipal Hernán Osorio Herrera was founded in 1994 and has been housed in the Club Unión Caraz building since 2009. The two dates describe different parts of its history: the museum’s founding and its later location. If you plan to visit the museum, check access arrangements in advance.

Flower Fair, Sunday Market and Regional Cuisine

The Feria de Flores de Caraz takes place on Wednesdays at the city market. Residents from rural areas come dressed in traditional clothing and sell roses, carnations, gladioli and daisies, among other things. A general goods fair is held on Sundays, where flowers are also sold alongside other products. For planning purposes, the difference makes the respective market days relevant: Wednesday’s fair is specifically dedicated to flowers, while flowers are part of the broader Sunday offering. Check the current schedule before your trip.

Typical dishes from the province are also part of the Feria de Flores offering: Caldo de Cabeza and Cuchicanca are sold there along with other dishes. Visitors interested in local cuisine can also consider the market from this perspective. These dishes are part of the fair’s offering; check their current availability when making specific plans.

Landscapes around Caraz

Laguna Miramar, also known as Tzaquicocha, is outside town in the area around Caraz. Its blue waters reflect the snow-capped peaks of Huandoy and Huascarán. The Cañón del Pato offers a different kind of scenery: the Santa River carved the canyon, where the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra come especially close together. The two places thus represent different scenic features of the surrounding area, and are not the same type of destination.

At Winchus, the Rodales de Puyas Raimondi include around 5,000 Puya Raimondii plants. There is a viewpoint overlooking the Cordillera Blanca. Another option in the area is the municipal Granja Interactiva Municipal, two kilometers south of Caraz. Animals kept there include ostriches, dairy goats and other farm animals. Check whether the facility is currently open before visiting.

Understanding Routes and Getting There

The road route from the Plaza de Armas de Caraz to Laguna Parón passes through Plazuela Nueva Victoria and the Parón checkpoint. If you plan to take this route, check current road conditions and transport options before setting out. The journey between Huaraz and Caraz by shared minibus is listed as 66 kilometers and takes 1 hour 30 minutes. Check transport availability before your trip; the distance and travel time alone do not indicate current availability.
