Bagua Grande brings together urban celebration venues and a landscape of mountains, rivers, waterfalls and lush vegetation. It also offers different perspectives on history and nature: religious and public celebrations held in the city in 2021 and 2022, as well as archaeological and paleontological sites in the surrounding area. The warm, humid climate is another factor to consider. Before planning your stay, you can weigh up whether cultural celebrations, landscapes or caving interest you most.

Culture and public celebration venues

The 2021 anniversary of Utcubamba Province included a solemn thanksgiving Mass at the Church of Santiago Apóstol. A flag procession also made its way through Bagua Grande’s main streets. Parque 7 de Junio was the venue for the provincial anniversary ceremony. The church, streets and park thus represent different settings for this urban celebration.

At the 2022 patron-saint celebration, a solemn Mass was held in front of the Catholic church in the provincial capital on the main day. A procession of the patron saint passed through some of the city’s streets. Comparing it with the 2021 provincial anniversary highlights two different celebrations: the focus here is on the patron-saint celebration and procession, while the provincial anniversary featured a flag procession and a ceremony in the park.

Parque 7 de Junio also had a food and handicrafts focus in 2022. On May 28, an agricultural, gastronomic and handicrafts fair was held there. Producers from various hamlets and districts across the province took part, and the best traditional dish was also awarded a prize. This event complements the religious celebrations with a glimpse of agriculture, handicrafts and regional cuisine.

Landscapes and sites in the surrounding area

In and around Bagua Grande, you can experience waterfalls, mountains and rivers, along with lush vegetation. Together with the warm, humid climate, these offer a natural contrast to the urban celebration venues. Each landscape feature adds its own character: waterfalls and rivers alongside mountains and dense vegetation. This makes it easy to distinguish the natural side of your trip from the cultural settings.

Quebrada Seca Alta, an archaeological and paleontological site, lies near Bagua Grande. It brings together archaeological remains, particularly pottery finds, and a prehistoric fossil deposit. The site has been damaged by rain. If you are considering a visit, check its current condition in advance.

The small Cueva 1 de las Tres Naranjas is located 20 kilometers south of Bagua Grande. It is inhabited by bats and has biogenic domes on the ceiling, as well as a second, smaller entrance. Its mapped development is 28 meters, and its vertical range is five meters. These two figures describe different measurements: mapped development and vertical range. Together with the cave’s features, they offer a specific glimpse into caving.

These different themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: urban celebration venues and historical events, natural features, or archaeological and paleontological sites. When choosing Bagua Grande as a destination, you can consider which of these will shape your stay.
